My Mom sent me this link. Enjoy!!

When I saw the picture of Jim Merlo wearing #57 on the "year by year" page, I realized how weird it was to see anyone other than Ricky Jackson wearing that number.

Reading the section on the dome Patrol made me remember what a pisspoor FO we really had back then. Every season after 1992 we had a different key player choose to leave us, but it all started with the FO trading Pat Swilling for Willie Roaf (basically.) You have 4 guys playing lights-out, pro-bowl football, they are hitting their prime, and then you trade one of them...then 1993 Rickey and Vaughan Johnson left and finally Sam Mills, each of which had 2-3 more good years before retiring. I just remember as a kid thinking that every Saints player must want to get traded, otherwise why would they keep sending all the good ones off (and then, nearly every year, whoever we sent away would win a super bowl the next year.)
It really makes me appreciate RLB and Loomis and how they try to keep the players happy and keep them around. |
Cool site - much thanks

Yep, in the old days if a player looked real good he went on the auction block.

Yeah Rugby Player = $$ quick profit . But ya know back then that's how it seemed.

Thanks for the link!!!! It's really neat to see the Saints yearbooks! Might download many of these to my hard-drive, what a great way to take a look back.

Problem with the Dome Patrol was they were too good and Mora didn't want to loosen things up; the same coach who convinced Jimmy Johnson to trade Steve Walsh instead of Troy Aikman to the Saints!!! |
Jackson, Mills, Johnson, Swilling...wow
then you had Mean Gene Atkins and Brett Maxie at the Safeties... You had a defensive line of Jumpy Geathers, Wayne Martin, Frank Warren... The only weak spot was the cornerbacks where no could stay healthy or Toast Cook... |
Dude your Mom is cool !
