Jimmy Robinson named new Saints wide receivers coach

The Associated Press

The New Orleans Saints have hired Jimmy Robinson as the club's new wide receivers coach.

Robinson, a 20-year coaching veteran and a receivers coach with the New York Giants for the last six seasons, replaces Hubbard Alexander.

Alexander was fired at the end of the Saints' 8-8 season.

"We talked to a lot of quality coaches in trying to fill this position, but in our view Jimmy's experience and track record made him a cut above the rest," coach Jim Haslett said Wednesday.

Under Robinson, from 1998-2003, the Giants' wide receivers posted the most successful seasons in club history. Amani Toomer became the team's all-time receiving yardage leader with 6,366 yards, and he established team records in 2002 with 82 catches and 1,387 yards.

In 2001, Giants wide receivers caught a team-record 186 passes for 2,680 yards and 15 touchdowns. In 1999, Toomer and Ike Hilliard combined for 2,179 receiving yards, becoming the first receiver tandem in Giants history to total more than 2,000 yards in a season.

Another move in the Haslett era that has me scratching my head in utter amazement .

From the news of Hubbards releasal :

Quote:

Both the wide receiver and defensive line units were inconsistent this year, partly because of inexperience and injuries. Receivers dropped passes and missed assignments.
On the hiring of Robinson :

Quote:

\"We talked to a lot of quality coaches in trying to fill this position, but in our view Jimmy\'s experience and track record made him a cut above the rest,\" coach Jim Haslett said Wednesday.
From this years stats :

Dropped passes

New Orleans 26
New York Giants 32

Pat Kirwin of NFL.com likes him...

2. Jimmy Robinson, wide receivers coach for the New York Giants. In the mold of Sullivan, Jimmy is an excellent teacher and is partially responsible for the development of Ike Hilliard, Amani Toomer and Tim Carter. Last week in the final game of the Fassel era, he was coaching guys named Ponder, Dinkins, Tyree, and they were lucky to learn from Robinson on how to play the game.

Well, I can see how some folks are going to view ANYTHING done by Jim Haslett and his coaching staff. Some folks are going to view anthing done as being negitive. For example, take the hiring of Jimmy Robinson. He could be a real asset to the Saints, but people like 08 will not even explore the possibilty it could be a good hire, he simply is going to be negitive becuase, well........THAT\'S WHAT HE DOES!! He doesn\'t want to look at any facts relating to ANYTHING. He simply wants to convince everyone that anything done by Haslett is a BAD move. Why he does this, I have no idea.

Fortunatly we have members here that research the facts and post good information and well informed opinions. Thanks Danno and saintfan for providing that info. on Jimmy Robinson, because, quite frankly, I hadn\'t heard of the man.

When you\'re pondering what\'s going on with the team, my advice would be to take the word of someone actually ON the team and not the word of someone who\'s seen one to many Oliver Stone Movies Billy. The agenda is clear. Just smile and move on. ;)

I\'m sure the guy is a good coach. I\'m not sure that he\'s THAT much better than the guy they just fired.

The main thing is that while Haslett and the co-ordinators are still here, nothing changes.

Please !!!!

If your a Head Coach and you give up your receivers coach as a sacrifical lamb at least upgrade the position to a higher coaching value . Haslett has complained all year about dropped balls , then goes out and hires some guy who\'s unit has dropped more balls then his .

Fred Graves in Buffalo , unit dropped 19 balls all season . Features top receiver Eric Moulds and Peerless Price .

Haz in Buffalo doing an interview ..... :P

I\'m not sure he\'s THAT much better either. But, who\'s to say he\'s not? I can realistically see a good receiver coach making a big difference. How \'bout we give the man a chance?

There\'s a lot that\'s changed since Haslett arrived. Even though our offense didn\'t meet the level of play from the previous year, our offense is still pretty damn good. Our special team units have a chance to be special again. The defense did improve some.

Now, let me be the first to say, I don\'t like the job that Haslett and co. have done the last couple of years, but, I feel like we are only two or three players away from being an uppper team. With a little luck and and some improved coaching (it does happen) we can be very good. Will that happen? I don\'t know, but I\'m going to look at the facts and not view EVERYTHING as being negitive, even though I wanted a new coach too.

You\'re assuming that the reason he replaced the receiver coach was ONLY because of dropped passes. Maybe route running, adjusting routes, learning to play press coverage better, etc, ect,... was part of the reason also. Ever think of that? Of course you DIDN\'T!!
It\'s also mentioned that Robinson is BIG on discipline. Sounds good to me.

Sources say that Alexander was let go because the team wanted to go in another direction and bring in a disciplinarian, someone who can clean things up before Lewis and Stallworth pick up too many bad habits.
http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW...HI/default.htm

Sound like they got what they were looking for, someone better suited to work with Stallworth after the horrendous year he had.

It was also very good to hear Horn smooth over the crap storm of his earlier outburst. One less distraction for a team with enough issues to contend with.

Great cuzz here is what you like :

Fred Graves receivers - 58.4 completion percentage and 19 drops
Alexander Hubbard - 58.7 completion percentage and 26 drops
Jimmy Robinson - 55.8 completion percentage and 32 drops

Disciplinarian ??

Would that be that he disciplines his receivers after they drop more balls then Hubbards unit and do not create the separation for the completion ??? ;)

Wait wait , I got it . The disciplinarian part comes in from the fact that Horn pulled the cellphone gag against Robinson\'s Giants .... :casstet:

saintz08 --

Are your stats for dropped passes OFFICIAL stats? Do ya have a LINK? If so, please provide one for me?? I don\'t mean to be to put you to any trouble, but you make me wonder about the credibility of your information sometimes. Ok, all the time, but that\'s another story.

Now, I must ask you something 08!! Why are we to believe that because some team had more dropped passes than another team, that it makes their receiver coach not qualified? Furthermore, oh nevermind........

You are gonna have to pay the piper , to verify . And yes they are the official stat keeper to the N.F.L. .

Is the primary function of a receiver to catch balls ???

As far as I remember, Price played in Atlanta this season. Not sure if you were paying attention.

Robinson has coached Toomer, Hilliard, Harrison (Marvin), Andre Rison, and Michael Haynes among others.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe, half of those drops came from Tiki Barber? He\'s known for his great hands! Furthermore, I\'m sure Shockey and the rookie TE never dropped a pass this year! Never!

Roflmao - That would have been a pretty long pass from scrimmage , Buffalo to Atlanta . My writing must have looked like something Saintsfan would have written .Supposed to be Once featured , OMG I have been reading Saintsfans posts to long I am typing like him ..lol

Not sure How many drops Barber has but according to this write up below in week 12 , Shockley is the bumble artist in New York and last I checked he is also a receiver .

Week 12 - Monday Night
Nov 24, 2003,

New York Giants vs. Tampa Bay

The Giants’ Offense really hasn’t consistently clicked all year, there have been spurts of production from Kerry Collins who has put up several 300 yard passing games, but the production is far from the prolific offense we expected to see in New York this year. Collins has thrown for 2655 yards but only 12 TDs in comparison to 13 interceptions giving him a barely passable QB rating of 74.0. Amani Toomer is still stretching defenses on the outside, hauling in 43 balls for 750 yards. The downside, Toomer has only 2 touchdowns. The teams red zone threat, if you could say they have one, has been Ike Hilliard who has 6 TD catches. To make matters worse, the much anticipated maturation of Jeremy Shockey at TE has been hampered by injuries, dropped passes, and an occasion homophobic remark. He’s been a solid Tight End but hasn’t drawn coverage like he did in his rookie year. All of this aside, the greatest problem the Giants have had is on there offense line. The line has three new starters and has allowed 17 sacks this year. Not quite Texanesque, but hardly the base for a high powered passing game. The running game, while still strong behind Tiki Barber, has been hampered by a cas of the fumbles. Barber better learn to hold onto the ball or the team may quickly forget his dual threat potential. Coming into the game with Tampa Bay, the Giants had better get well quick. Shockey is listed as questionable and will play if Fassel determines it won’t reaggravate his injury. Ike Hilliard is also questionable. If he doesn’t play, keep an eye on rookie David Tyree who broke out for 106 yards last game. Look for the Giants to take it slow this game and try to get off to a solid start behind Tiki and then open up the passing game in the second quarter. I expect the Giants offense to get on track against a Tampa defense that has been more bark than bite this year.

Actually, Shockey is a TE (or tight end for the rest of us) and would accordingly be coached by the Tight Ends Coach.

No kidding , receiver coaches are usually the reception specialists and if the problem persists the Tight end coach will defer to the receiver coach on technique .

Saints hire receivers coach

Ex-Giants assistant Robinson joins staff

Thursday January 15, 2004

By Brian Allee-Walsh
Staff writer

Saints coach Jim Haslett filled one of his two staff vacancies Wednesday with the hiring of veteran wide receivers coach Jimmy Robinson.

Robinson, 51, comes to the Saints from the New York Giants where he served under former coach Jim Fassel the past six seasons. Fassel and his staff were fired after the season.

From Our Advertiser

Robinson replaces former Saints wide receivers coach Hubbard Alexander, whose contract was not renewed.

\"We wanted an experienced guy, plus Jimmy\'s played the game and that\'s a real positive,\" Haslett said. \"He\'s a disciplinarian. He\'s a tough guy. He\'s a perfect fit for our football team. We talked to a lot of quality coaches in trying to fill this position but in our view Jimmy\'s experience and track record has made him a cut above the rest.\"

The job came down to Robinson and former Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Jerry Sullivan, who\'s expected to become wide receivers coach for Miami.

\"This is a great chance to work for a good team with a lot of talented wide receivers,\" said Robinson, who signed a two-year contract. \"I\'m grateful for the opportunity and am looking forward to the challenge.\"

Robinson\'s hiring was received warmly by Saints wide receiver Joe Horn, who had publicly criticized team officials for not retaining Alexander.

\"I\'m very happy for Coach Robinson and his family,\" said Horn, who missed the regular-season finale against Dallas with a separated shoulder. \"Hopefully he can upgrade our receiving corps and make a big difference. I\'m sure there are a lot of things he can teach us. I look forward to working with him.

\"I plan on getting a personal trainer this offseason and come back in the best shape of my life. I want to help this franchise win a Super Bowl for Mr. (Tom) Benson in the next couple of years. I\'m going to chill out and get back to being the Joe Horn that I\'ve always been and make plays like I always have.\"

Robinson has tutored some outstanding receivers during NFL coaching stops with Atlanta (1990-93), Indianapolis (1994-97) and the Giants (1998-2003), including Amani Toomer, Ike Hilliard, Marvin Harrison, Andre Rison, Michael Haynes and Mike Pritchard, among others.

Robinson played wide receiver for seven seasons with the Atlanta Falcons (1975), Giants (1976-79), San Francisco 49ers (1980) and Denver Broncos (1981).

He also coached at Georgia Tech (1986-89) and with the Memphis Showboats in the USFL (1985-86).

Haslett is in the process of hiring a defensive line coach. That opening was created when team officials did not renew the contract of Sam Clancy.

NOTES: Assistant strength and conditioning coach Jerry Palmeiri resigned to become the Giants\' new strength and conditioning coach under Coach Tom Coughlin.
