Officiating

What really bothered me is how bad the officiating was.

At the beginning of the game it looked like it was going to be one sided, like the Bears were paying off the officials but as it turned out they were just BAD!!!

That call on Roman Harper was pure :bs:

|Mitch| 09-19-2011 01:14 PM

And instead of giving Sproles the hit out of bounds to compensate for the bull**** roughing the passer, they just moved the ball a yard or two to give him the first...

73Saint 09-19-2011 01:14 PM

Yes!!! It was awful, on both sides. How did the Sproles TD count?? They totally blew that one, as I thought they were supposed to review ALL scoring play. Refs seriously need to be fined just like the players...and it needs to be publicized!! Not to mention the clean hit on Cutler by Harper. I think Alaska touched on this during the game time chat...the calls they are making to protect from injuries is having an adverse affect on the game.

saintfan 09-19-2011 01:22 PM

As bad a game as I can recall. Those in the chat room know I was miffed.

The thing is, the refs are doing what the league instructs them to do. Harper made a textbook tackle - nothing overly aggressive or malicious or even remotely close.

I respect that the league wants safety, but teams should be able to review those kinds of calls. It was complete horse **** and could have easily cost us the game.

Yep we played two team and won..

AlaskaSaints 09-19-2011 01:28 PM

I mean how do you pull back from a tackle once your head is tucked under the armpit of the quarterback and you both are airborne?

If he unloaded the ball, clearly, before you made contact I could see it, but that flag was unwarranted.

Later in the game Drew gets ridden to the ground but unloads during the ride and no flag? Just be consistent.

If they lighten this up too much it will seriously diminish the game of football.

Alaska

There was a communications malfunction according to Peter King. The extra point was kicked and it was too late. Good for us I guess. Also calls tend to even out over the course of a game, even BS ones.

Mardigras9 09-19-2011 02:04 PM

Not sure why, but it has been like that across the league all year, officiating has declined horribly this year.

JoanieNTX 09-19-2011 02:35 PM

Can you say F-R-U-S-T-R-A-T-I-N-G????!!!! OMG, I was so ready to go over that rail and get hold of some zebras!!! Horrible, horrible officiating!

Cruize 09-19-2011 04:01 PM

How can these guys be the best in the business? They're just horrible. I think the college refs are better than the NFL's. I'm waiting for some NFL player that doesn't give a crap, to tell the world that he's going to try and knock the QB the heck out. Since he's going to be flagged anyway, he might as well make it count. LOL.

GAwhodat 09-19-2011 04:56 PM

I agree the officiating was horrible. I'm hard of hearing so I can read lips and but Coach Peyton was going off on that ref and for good reason LOL. I figured for all the BS plays we got they should give us the Sproles out of bounds :)~ LOL

homerj07 09-19-2011 08:51 PM

The late hit out of bounds that was not called - I would like to hear the explanation for that!!

Not only the calls, but it seemed like there were also screwy things happening with the game/play clock, especially earlier in the game. They kept mysteriously stopping the play clock when the Bears had the ball, they'd start it counting down, then pause it for just a few seconds, then turning it on again, giving the Bears a few more seconds here and there, to help them get a play in and to quiet down the crowd. Then when the Saints had the ball, the clock was starting the instant the whistle blew, and running continuously, like it's supposed to. I think the officiating crew did not have their act together, especially early in the game.

But I look at it like this: if it weren't for the benefit of dubious officiating, the Bears would not have gotten that touchdown in the first quarter. It was really their only impressive offensive drive of the day, and it was loaded with gimmes and extra clock stoppages, gift-wrapped first downs and all sorts of chances for "do overs." Other than that drive where they had the refs' help, you are looking at 30-6 or even worse for the Bears.

Only loosing teams complain about the refs

Nope. Need to correct that. All teams complain about the refs, only loosing teams blame it on the refs.

crawgator 09-20-2011 12:49 PM

How do some of these guys get jobs as Refs.. Good thing they are not air traffic controllers... What a mess that would be!!!!! Cause they sure seem to be blind at times...

Hey, I noticed that about the clock, too! Pointed it out to the hubby, as we were behind the Bear's bench on the 35 yard line...I had a really good view of it! I was worried that the Forty Whiners of old were reincarnated into Bears uniforms, and here we go again! (All that mafia stuff). ;)
