Saints waive Joique Bell to make room for Will Smith

Guess we'll know soon if he clears waivers.

AlaskaSaints 09-21-2011 03:10 PM

Ouch. Well, sorta.

Alaska

Ashley 09-21-2011 03:26 PM

? never would have thought that. My money was on a fullback, that's why i never gamble. Oh well

73Saint 09-21-2011 03:46 PM

My money was on IR'ing Hartley. And while I don't typically second-guess Payton, I will say this: he is one hard-headed SOB. Hartley has been, in a lot of ways, just like Bush. Up and down, inconsistent, makes you nervous when he's near the ball, etc., etc. But for some reason, SP has a thing for him...

Has anyone else noticed how nice it is when Kasay kicks? Not the fact that his kicks split the uprights, so much as they don't hook like a bad golf shot!!

I second your thoughts... I hope Bell clears the waivers and can be put on the PS.

His agent says they aren't opposed to the PS but that they will explore all his options. Doesn't sound encouraging I'm afraid.

HEE GOOONEEEE

jeanpierre 09-21-2011 06:11 PM

Didn't we get comfortable with our RB depth before?

Besides, Miami, Kansas City, Tampa Bay, Washington need Running Backs

jeanpierre 09-21-2011 06:19 PM

He cleared waivers and was signed to the practice squad...

...per Kevin Spain, Times-Picayune...

jnormand 09-21-2011 06:19 PM

I like Bell. But I when can we use the guy? I mean we already are deep at RB. Ivory is still supposed to come back too. I hope we can keep him.

Wow! We should consider ourselves fortunate. I'm really surprised somebody didn't snatch him up. :D

homerj07 09-21-2011 06:26 PM

Damn - I think we saw this coming

crawgator 09-21-2011 06:41 PM

That could come back and Bite us in the ass... There are some teams that need running backs..

Hartley makes me nervous as hell also, he did kick us into the super bowl though...and that has gone a long way with me.

|Mitch| 09-21-2011 09:02 PM

Did anyone ever say exactly what was wrong with Hartley? All I ever heard was a hip injury?

saintfan 09-21-2011 09:38 PM

Kickers are a dime a dozen. GOOD kickers aren't. Hartley is going to be a good kicker in the NFL for a lot of years. I don't think we're going to send him packing.

Rugby Saint II 09-21-2011 11:36 PM

The man owns a Superbowl record for kicks over 40 yds. He missed time because of a 4 game suspension for adderol which wasn't very bright . He's good and is even going to kick better with time.

RockyMountainSaint 09-22-2011 01:26 AM

Pigs have flown!
Hell has frozen over!
The Saints are on their way to the Superbowl!

Speedy Ron 09-22-2011 09:54 AM

thinking of cutting ties with hartley is ludacris. hes a top 10 kicker in the league if not top 5. hes young and good. kasay is good as a hold over but he did get cut for olinde mare

Budsdrinker 09-22-2011 09:57 AM

I don't think anyone wants to cut ties with Hartley it's just that with his injury which could keep him out for 10 weeks, it just makes sense to place him on IR. He is our kicker for next 5 or so years but it just doesn't make sense to waste a roster spot when he is out for 7 more weeks.

strato 09-22-2011 10:00 AM

I was hoping to see if Bell could get the next 3 and 1...nobody else can..

dizzle88 09-22-2011 10:11 AM

There's a post on Nola.com that says Bell has been resigned to the practice squad after clearing waivers, the guy is a solid back.

Crusader 09-22-2011 10:36 AM

I guess Bell wasn't "that good in other peoples eyes. I mean there are teams out there with a need at that position.

He'd have no better luck than anybody else. Our short yardage issues aren't back related, they are line related.

He has PROVEN his value as a post-season kicker!

That is a VERY rare commodity.

That is why you keep a roster spot open for him.

I know that I am more comfortable with him in the playoffs and Super Bowl than I am with Kasay.

I am never comfortable with Hartley kicking. LOL. However, there simply is no reason or rush to IR him right now. Bell was inactive every week and was going to continue to be without an injury. The Saints have two fullbacks and an extra defensive lineman on the roster as well. Kasay has been great. But, he is 41. The only reason to IR Hartley would be if they needed the roster spot for someone who will be active on gameday.

Budsdrinker 09-23-2011 09:05 AM

OK What happens when Ivory comes off of the PUP list? You have to make a move. What's it going to be?

Nevermind...I see that he did clear and now on practice squad.
