Still no progress on Brees contract
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, an agreement still has not been reached between the Saints and Brees on a contract extension. The Saints want to get it done, but the financial divide remains too wide.
The two sides remain expected to pull the plug on talks at some point in the near future, for fear of the situation becoming a perceived distraction, especially if the Saints struggle on the field. The absence of a new contract keeps the injury risk on Brees — but it also drives his leverage higher as he gets closer and closer to completing the contract. For now, he’s negotiating from a final-year base salary of just under $10 million. If the Saints are forced to use the franchise tag on Brees, his starting point will be a one-year deal that likely will be worth $17 million or more in 2012. Glad this has NOT been a distraction. Makes me think they'll get it done.

There is no way that we put the franchise tag on Drew. That would be a slap in the face and a show of disrespect. No. We'll get it done this off season. No distractions.............

Kind of keeps an edge in his play, don't cha think?

The better he plays, the more he can demand.

Do they have nothing to write about.

i like the fact they are kicking it around early. both side know it will be a big dollar amount of course. my concerns are the details:
1) duration - how much longer can he keep this up. 2) bonus money vs contract money - this is big. he needs a manning style of deal. Dare i say cap friendly. |
He is in 09 form again this year, he will get his deal done, no question and big money.
