The non-comparison of Delhomme/Brooks Thread
I'm throwing out my favorite pet theory here.
We need to trade Brooks, a #2 pick and a conditional #2 next year to the Chargers for their #1 overall and a conditional #3 next year. Armed with that pick, we need to draft Eli Manning or even Roethlisberger and then take the highest linebacker available with our other #1. In free agency, we need to take Brunell and the very best CB we can afford. On the Brunell front, we need to move fast because I think Marino will need to think seriously about bringing Brunell in to give Miami some credibility. Brunell might just be the hottest free agent in the early part of this off-season. Hiring Marino makes Miami very dangerous to my theory and time is of the essence for us to make this move. I wouldn't be disappointed at all to have it done before the combine. |

And how smart would you look BMG if Eli didn\'t pan out? Honestly I watched him play a couple games last year and I\'m not sayin\' the guy sucks (far from it) but I think people assume a lot about him because of his last name. Besides, the Saints aren\'t trading Brooks anyway.

Saintsfan,
I\'m not saying the scenario is likely, but it does have the merit of being plausible. My thought at this point is that drafting Eli would be a huge commercial success for the organization. It would buy Haslett another extension and it would give the Saints a first round franchise type QB that we haven\'t really had since Archie. And I do agree with you in this respect, it would be a risk. Brooks is, after all, the devil we know. That\'s why I think the Brunell move is so important. With Brunell we wouldn\'t have to throw Eli into the meat grinder right away. Since we\'re talking wild flights of fancy here, we could dump McCarthy and hire Jim Fassell. Fassell is one of the very best QB coaches in the league. I think Eli would really benefit from Fassell\'s coaching. Could you imagine what Fassell could do with Brunell and a tailback that doesn\'t fumble in Deuce? At any rate, I think the risk is worthwhile. Eli probably has a better than average grasp of the pro game than a typical college QB. I think he\'s a good risk. Do I think he\'s a 1st ballot hall of famer? Who knows? But it isn\'t like we\'ve got one of those now anyhow. The real issue is that Mark Brunell isn\'t going to last long in free agency. I think it would be well worth our time to see how interested the Chargers are in a Brooks trade. If we could manage that, then Brunell would be a wonderful pickup for us. We just have to do it fast. |

When evaluating the Saints needs, I believe they need to be addressed in order of importance. I think our offesive line needs to be upgraded to a certain degree, but that\'s not where I would start first!! Concentrating on the real problem areas are what any logical GM would do. Not trying to upgrade a position that is one of the strongest on the team. There are better running backs in the league than Deuce, but I\'m not concerned about getting one of \'em because we are fine at running back.
Everyone in the Saints organization and any fan that really follows the Saints knows the problem is not QB, it\'s the defense and coaching. Replacing a productive QB does not make sense to me and would only serve to set this organization back for several years. Any postion on the Saints can be upgraded, because I don\'t feel we have the # 1 player in the league at ANY position, but does that mean we should not address the needs in order of importance? That makes sense to me. [Edited on 23/1/2004 by BillyC] |

Coaching--Fassell at OC would be a gold mine for us. I don\'t think the current OC will get it done and I\'m not sold on Venturi, but in his defense, he hasn\'t been given the guys to work with either. |

To suggest Mark Brunell as being any kind of answer for the problems on the Saints is just so far out in left field. I\'ll hope the Saints address the problems on the team with good sound judgement and not go replacing guys at the drop of a hat. |

Eli? I like the kid and I think his name would be a marketing dream for the organization... and he may even buy Haslett more time, but that\'s the wrong way to go. I have to agree completely with Billy on this one. Look at the defense first. Once you\'ve SIGNED an impact MLB and CB through FREE AGENCY then you can start thinking about the offense.
