Listening to Jim Henderson call the game

I usually don't turn on 870am when the game's on TV, but I was driving home from Shreveport so I listened to Jim Henderson the whole way back.

I noticed a lot of discrepancies on his down and distance calls throughout the entire game. i.e. "1st and 10, Drew throws a 5 yard pass to Darren Sproles… that'll bring up 2nd and 7. or 1st down and the Saints have the ball on the Jaguars 45 yard line… Mark Ingram pushes the ball to the 39… that'll bring up 2nd and 6." I'm paraphrasing there, but this happened throughout the whole game. I like Jim, but his calls were either very inaccurate or he just was too lacksadaisacal (sp?) in his distance analysis. Not a big deal, but it's just aggravating when I'm driving and trying to get a visual of what's going on in the game.

I love listening to Jim Henderson. He SOUNDS like the Saints are on.

We have Milo Hamilton in Houston calling Astros games, and like Harry Caray toward the end, he cant see anymore. I just go with it. I'd rather have a little hair-splitting detail, than listen to someone vanilla.

In radio, we use the term, "theatre of the mind."

I heard that happen at least once...

Talking about bias announcers, I can remember back in the olden days when I use to get out on the porch to try to catch an Astro game when they would be playing the Giants. 2 samples of a call from those guys back then...and I'm talking maybe 20 years ago or so...

1st sample...

Bagwell at the plate for the Astros, the pitch...IT"S A LONG TOWERING CLOUT, WAY, WAY BACK THERE...HE GOT ALL OF THAT ONE...caught on the warning track for the final out of the inning.

2nd sample...

Darryl Evans batting for the Giants...here's the pitch...fly ball...home run.

I agree - Whenever I have to listen to a game I would like the announcer to give me an accurate "picture" of what is going on!!
