Brees passes Saints to comeback win in Carolina
Posted by Michael David Smith on October 9, 2011, 4:38 PM EDT
ReutersThe Panthers gave the Saints all they could handle today in Carolina, but in the end Drew Brees came up big — and Cam Newton came up just short — as New Orleans won 30-27.

Brees had another big day, completing 32 of 45 passes for 359 yards and two touchdowns, the second of which went to Pierre Thomas with less than a minute remaining, giving the Saints a lead after they had trailed for most of the fourth quarter.

That gave Newton one last chance to lead the Panthers back, and Newton did march the Panthers into Saints territory in the final seconds. But his last pass fell short, and the Panthers walked off the field having lost again, falling to 1-4 on the season.

The Panthers can take solace in knowing that they’re playing competitive football: All four of their losses are by a touchdown or less. For Carolina, that’s progress.

As for the Saints, they got big days from Jimmy Graham (129 receiving yards) and Darren Sproles (91 yards from scrimmage), and at 4-1 they’re looking like one of the best teams in football.

What should not be overlooked was the horrible refereeing in this game. Steve Smith dragging Jenkins around by his facemask was inexcusable and should’ve been a penalty and probably an ejection. Ingram taunted a Panthers player and was rightfully penalized, however the Panthers player threw a forearm shiver to his head/face area and was not. A really awful roughing the passer was called on a perfectly clean hit on Newton on 3rd down that extended a drive and let the Panthers score a go-ahead touchdown.

Officiating was historically bad in this game. The NFL is the biggest most important sports league in the world and I don’t see how they can continue to let this crap happen week after week.

mikesaintfan 10-09-2011 06:06 PM

all fans think their team gets robbed by the refs...we get robbed, pistol whipped, and sodomised by the zebras

TheEnigma 10-09-2011 06:31 PM

The two roughing the passer flags I think both resulted in a TD for Carolina. Ridiculous! Then on 4th and 10 with the game nearly over, the refs call a pass interference (or it may have been an llegal contact) on Roman Harper and it gives them a fresh set of downs. Normally I hate blaming the refs, but I can't help but think they wanted the panthers to win.

Euphoria 10-09-2011 06:38 PM

This is a huge problem this year...

POOR OFFICIATING. It just seems it gets worse and worse every year.

The good thing is that it just so happens to even out for both sides.

Jack Vegas 10-09-2011 06:39 PM

LOL that PFT comment is me

foreverfan 10-09-2011 06:41 PM

The great news is... we are finally good enough to beat the other team and the zebras!

SaintPauly 10-09-2011 06:50 PM

Worst officiating i've seen in years.... That no call, on the helmet to helmet, on Drew was just freaking ridiculous... Cam Newton is being groomed to be the face of the NFL... You can see it in everything they do about the Panthers... I just watched the game highlights on NBC, and they showed nothing but Panthers replays, except for our game winning touchdown.... Pathetic...

How's that working out for them? 1-4!!! LOL!

saintfan 10-09-2011 06:57 PM

The reason it gets worse is because they keep trying to take the violence out of a violent game. That first roughing penalty is exhibit "A". The second one, the helmet to helmet...ticky tack, okay, whatever. But that first one...that was a joke.

Euphoria 10-09-2011 07:06 PM

Actually just to clarify the penalty of rushing the passer on Cam was actually the right freakin call I hate to say it.

I was damn sure the ball was in his hand when they hit him.

The problem on the play is that we hit him high by one player and another player cam in low. That is a roughing the passer penalty.

The same thing was called on us against the Vikes in the NFC championship game if I recall. They didn't do a good job explaining the call vs the Panters.

AlaskaSaints 10-09-2011 07:14 PM

If I'm ahead by 30 the officiating won't matter! LOL

Agreed. Very frustrating today.

I don't like that we're becoming a cheap-shot and taunting team. That can only mean that we have insecurities.

ScottF 10-09-2011 07:31 PM

The Smith thing was ridiculous, and why wasn't the PF on the field goal stiil enforced? It was a dead ball foul during a dead ball situation.
So, if there's a whistle for a false start and then someone drills the quarterback it is not a PF?

FireVenturi 10-09-2011 08:44 PM

Terrible, all the way around. At times it felt like they were trying to help the Panties keep it close... oh well. Good teams can overcome the fix and that's what we did.

There's no way for men that size (or any size) to stop. It isn't possible. The only way to avoid something like that is to just not try to go after him. It's a joke.

SaintPauly 10-09-2011 09:21 PM

Like I said earlier.... I have hated Steve Smith since he first came into the league... He's a punk, and an instigator... Glad he got nailed... Just wish Jenkins would have put up a better fight!

The penalty had nothing to do with a late hit on the QB. In fact it was a hit happening at the time of release.

This is where the rule gets crazy. 2 players can't hit the QB, one high and one low. Now how are you suppose to communicate and know what the other player is going to make his hit???

It's one of those penalties that you have to accept when it happens.

The roughing the passer rule does not state that a passer can not be hit by two players simmultanously, only that a person cannot lunge at or below a passers knees while on the ground. The call was on Turk McBride who hit Cam in the chest, thus the ruling on the field is wrong. The other hit was actually at his thigh which is a clean play.

I have to disagree, the high low in the Championship game was illegal, but it is what gave way to the birth of dumass calls like this first roughing the passer call on Saints D. When they showed the shot back you can see all the Saints Defenders around cam are actually tackling not spearing another thing to look out for is the helmet. And that was under the shoulder pads of cam. That first drive for Carolina shouldn't have happened

FinSaint 10-10-2011 05:48 AM

Yeah, there were a lot of bad calls all around in that game, but the Rogers roughing the passer was a good call at least.

What made me more angry was the Sproles run where it was ruled a fumble on the field when everyone should've clearly seen that he was down before the ball came out. While the call was reversed, it should've never been ruled a fumble with a ref 4 feet away from the play. Just ridiculous... if that would've happened with a team out of challenges and the clock not down inside the 2 minutes, it could've been disastrous.

Boy, that is a more profound statement on the "State of the Franchise" than people realize...

All those losses to Atlanta, San Fran, Minnesota over the years because a single play botched by refs...

Ashley 10-10-2011 07:01 AM

Yea that was bad all around. That was a pathic crew

Beastmode 10-10-2011 07:36 AM

To play devil's advocate, they did get some critical calls right. The Sproles reversal, sure it was wrong at first but it's hard to tell in real time, did he have control as he went down? I couldn't tell. Same goes for a couple of Panther catches. They looked good initially, but the control wasn't there when they hit the ground. Then the timeout call that gave us 3 points.

I do agree they made mistakes but I think it's overall a wash. As for grooming Cam, I think without question they are hyping him way too much. That TD to Smith was all Smith, and the interception was a complete boneheaded throw. It's going to be interesting to see if they keep chasing the ambulance if they wind up with 5 wins because right now Cam's confidence is clearly shaken and that option gimmick is going to start getting crushed behind the line.

Cruize 10-10-2011 08:49 AM

Since the calls are truly unexplainable, and I hate to say it, it lends credence to the refs having a direct say in regards to the outcome and the final score.

ScottF 10-10-2011 09:06 AM

Same topic, new question:
did anyone else think they should have reviewed the interception off Graham's hands?
To me he doesn't have the second foot down when he secures the ball

I agree with you.

JoanieNTX 10-10-2011 02:21 PM

The officiating just made me ill. I finally look at the hubby and just laughed, and said, "Obviously there are about 18 players on the field for the panties in every play, because the zebras have on white, black and turquoise underwear!" I agree with the above statement. I have seen some horrid officiating over the years, but so far, this season is taking the cake! Where do they find these idiots??? I remember back in the day when the Forty Whiners used to win, win, win, and all the calls went their way. I had this gut feeling there was some serious "payola" involved. Well, years later I met someone who actually worked for the organization, and confirmed it. Also said that the "mafia" was present on a daily basis there, and he (this person) never made eye contact with the men in the pinstriped suits! With that said.....I am betting we can look "forward" to more bad officiating in the future!

Mardigras9 10-10-2011 02:23 PM

Officiating has been horid all year in every game

I thought the exact same thing, but the replays were not very good of that play and there was no way to say whether that second foot was inbounds when he had secured the ball. I don't know if they would've had better angles at their disposal "under the hood."

Euphoria 10-10-2011 03:32 PM

The INT was legit. Both feet mad it down in bounds...

It wasn't close to even being reviewed.

SaintsBro 10-10-2011 03:33 PM

One thing that was really bad about the officiating in that game, was that various bad calls they made, or non-calls, actually CAUSED or inflamed the unsportsmanlike conduct type garbage behavior on BOTH teams. They continually missed stuff and allowed it to escalate, instead of nipping the garbage in the bud early on...at one point the refs were very dangerously close to losing control of the game...but things like that ridiculously late Roman Harper hit, they don't happen in a vacuum...not saying he was right to do it, or it should be excused, it was a penalty, but something was obviously going on there that caused it to happen...which the refs did NOT see.

JoanieNTX 10-10-2011 03:53 PM

You know if Steve Smith was anywhere around, there was "crap" talking goin' on! He just can't help himself...it froths out of his mouth like a rabid dog! So....I'm sure Harper was reacting to some stuff. Not sayin' it was right, but not sayin' it was WRONG, either! :) Love to see me some Steve Smith laid out on the field! :)

A few bogus calls in this game with the roughing the passer, such is life in the NFL some weeks.

AlaskaSaints 10-11-2011 12:48 AM

You can bet Steve Smith will be trying to disrespect us at home. There'll be paybacks paid on both sides, surely.
