Robinson more at ease in 2nd year

METAIRIE — For a moment early in Sunday’s game with the Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints second-year cornerback Patrick Robinson allowed his emotions to get the best of him.

For a moment, Robinson thought Saints coaches might yell at him. Which, when he was reminded of it a few days later, certainly could have happened a year ago when he was a raw rookie.

But when Robinson intercepted Panthers rookie Cam Newton on the game’s first play and returned the errant pass inside the Carolina 10 to set up the offense for a quick score, his big play and unbridled exuberance were welcomed.

The second-year pro, who has settled in and started the past four games at right cornerback, whipped the ball high into the air after he was tackled at the Panthers’ 6 following his second NFL interception. The first came one week earlier against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“That was just emotion,” Robinson said, noting the second pick was more satisfying. “I really didn’t realize that I did that, but I was like, ‘I just cost myself,’ I didn’t know if I was going to get a penalty or not, so it was all emotion.”

All he got when he returned to the bench area, however, was smiles.

First play of the game really and bam!!!

Porter looked great his first year then he broke his wrist so we had to wait to watch him develop. Now we are watching P Rob mature. We are going to finally have the corners that Payton has been looking for since he came here.

st thomas 10-14-2011 12:13 PM

he has great closing speed on the ball, the more experience this guy gets he should get better and better. he's a keeper. all players have growing pains so be nice to the guy.

I'm not sold just yet; the GB game he wasn't great, and we've given up a lot of big plays and had a ton of busted coverage

102 points given up in 3 games against the decent teams (one minus its star RB) is scary

It seemed like the kid played way too far off his guy in GB, trying to keep plays in front of him. But, the opposing QB was Aaron Rodgers. That guy is the best QB in the league right now.

Robinson seems to be getting more comfortable each game. I think he's been pretty solid so far this year.

I'll grant the GB game wasn't a great 1st start, but what do you fault Robinson for in the Carolina and Houston game?

Carolina was mostly the 54 yard pass to Steve Smith (Greer covering), and a 69 yard run by Williams. Robinson certainly wasn't exploited in that game.

Against Houston, every DB and LB on the roster was schooled by Andre Johnson.

What exactly are you not sold on with Robinson, because the 102 points are much more an indictment on the entire defense than it is on Patrick Robinson.

Great late 1st round steal (noted the Vikings were going to select him at top of 2nd round) just think when he meets his potential the Saints will be deep at corner if they don't let Porter walk when his contract is up

Anyone got a vid? Believe it or not, I had too much coffee waiting for the game and took a pee break. Came back and Drew was lining up...

Damn peanut-bladder!!!

Yes, it's an indictment against the entire D, of which he is a part.
He did not play well against GB or Hou.
Jax & Chi (minus Forte) have inept offenses, which leaves us to the Carolina game, in which he had zero tackles, and picked off a ball thrown right to him.

I'm not sold yet because two easy picks doesn't qualify a guy for the Pro Bowl, or even a starting spot in front of Porter. He might eventually be great, but I am not ready to canonize him just yet.

Oh, I missed the part where someone said he was a pro-bowler and a future hall of famer.

BIGEASY504 10-15-2011 03:42 PM

It's still gonna take him some time but it's a vast improvement for him from last year. What I noticed of him is that he does keep the receiver in front of him cause he has the speed to recover so he's still relying on his athleticism but once he start to control the receiver in coverage and be a little more instinctive we'll have the makings of a star CB but right now it's still hit or miss with him. As the season goes he should improve in a lot of areas

Belair57 10-15-2011 04:47 PM

It was thrown RIGHT TO HIM!!! so Im not impressed, and he got freakin OWNED against the packers, he didnt suddenly change his colors in a few games..hes a liability, regardless of his improvements over last year.

papz 10-15-2011 07:43 PM

Averaging well over 30 points per game, every corner going up against Aaron Rodgers is a liability. If we're going to use Green Bay as a blue print, well then there's less than a handful of good corners in this league.

The kid is going to be a player for a long time in the black and gold. Give it some time.

Can I quote myself??

papz 10-30-2011 03:44 PM

You sure can. Though with that said, Patrick Robinson is not the reason why we lost... nor was he terrible today.

The play in which he got beat, though I could be wrong, looked like a cover 2 type scheme. Patrick played the short underneath route and it looked like Jenkins was responsible for coverage on the back end.

Belair57 10-30-2011 03:46 PM

I played football for a number of years papz....and for the life of me, I cannot figure out why the F&#$ our corners play so far off...even in pressure packages you dont play that far off....that is why Robinson troubles me...

papz 10-30-2011 03:50 PM

It's the scheme man. We've done it for years. That's something you should not put on the corners. I do agree... I never understood why we played so far back. That problem can only be fixed if Williams wants it to be fixed.
