New Orleans Saints Week 6 Pregame: Saints @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The New Orleans Saints have won their last four games in a row to advance to 4-1 after getting squeezed out by the World Champion Green Bay Packers on opening day this season. Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers just got beat to a pulp by the San Francisco 49ers out west to drop to 3-2 and second place in the NFC South behind the Saints by a whole game.
The competition of the NFC South becomes vividly apparent in this series when you look at the fact that since Tampa and New Orleans were placed in the same division in 2002, the series is dead even between the two teams. Although the Saints hold a 22-16 lead in the series over the Buccaneers since 1977, a good chunk of seasons where New Orleans dominated over Tampa were products of the Dome Patrol days in the late 80′s and early 90′s. Between 1987 and 1992, the Saints enjoyed 4 playoff appearances including an NFC West Division Championship in 1991 all as a direct result of the Dome Patrol of Sam Mills, Rickey Jackson, Vaughn Johnson and Pat Swilling.
