The Panthers expect to have most of their team back intact next season, and we hear two of the stars of their run to the postseason likely will be re-signed by March. QB Jake Delhomme went from free-agent acquisition to starting quarterback after the first half of the first game of the season, and sources say the team will make an effort to extend his contract and make sure he is paid at the level of an NFL starter. WR Steve Smith also is expected to ink a deal relatively quickly, although the Smith situation could come with a few more problems than Delhomme’s. Smith has said before that he believes he should be paid on the same level as other top wide receivers, but his production really hasn’t been at the same level of the top pass catchers in the game for very long. The Panthers are willing to reward Smith for a stellar season, in which he made 88 catches for 1,110 yards and seven touchdowns, but they aren’t going to be offering him Randy Moss-like money. If Smith demands such a contract, the Panthers will be willing to let him walk if another team is interested in signing him as a restricted free agent. http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW...HI/default.htm The title of this thread was truncated for some reason. At any rate, this is the second bit of printed info I've managed to locate an Jake's coming raise, which brings into question the "cheap" QB theory. Just how much it WILL be is anyone's guess. How many millions defines a "Starter" wll be told soon enough I rekon. [Edited on 30/1/2004 by saintfan] |

Logically, (sarcasim) the only thing the Panthers can do is trade Delhomme for the Chargers first round pick and draft Eli Manning. Geez, saintfan, Get with the program man. Was that really hard to figure out? LMAO>>>> :P

Here\'s a serious question for the talent evaluators here:
Who are the no-name QB\'s out there who will LEAD their teams to the super bowl next year. Y\'all keep telling me that the high priced QB\'s are hurting their teams, so who\'s the next Jake Delhomme or Trent Dilfer for next year. Who should the Colts and Saints trade their QB for? Ahhh, so my speculation is starting to make a little sense eh...now we\'ll argue about top 5 or top 10...or less...either way, according to your argument they\'ll wanna dump him for something cheaper right? Or is that not what you\'ve been saying?
First, at least of couple/three folks in here accused me of speculation...now you\'ll argue the semantics. Lemme clear it up. Top 5, 10, or less (starter salary -- whatever that may be) YOU say teams need to look for a cheap alternative to the QB position rather than look for a \"flashy\" guy with great numbers, right -- so they can spend that money elsewhere? Jake Delhomme isn\'t gonna be that \"Cheap Alternative\" next year, and that has NADDA to do with Brooks or his contract. So what say you Whodat...shall the Panthers refuse to renegotiate with Jake? Shall they look for some unknown guy with potential from NFLE they can sign for a pittance? I guess we can have this discussion since we have proof that others besides me are speculating... |

Is Billy Kilmer still alive? Maybe he can come back and lead us to the promised land!
He would probably play without a helmet. |

So by that statement above are you trying to tell me that Jake Delhomme is now a \"flashy guy with great numbers\"??? Seems to me that you\'ve been arguing the opposite all year. Should the Panthers renegociate with Delhomme? Damn right - they could QUADRUPLE his salary and he\'d still only be paid an average starting QB salary... oh, and he\'d still be $20 million less expensive than Aaron Brooks. That\'s right AB costs the Saints NINE times what Delhomme costs the Panthers. Are you gonna tell me Brooks is NINE times more important to the Saints as Delhomme is to Carolina? See, you and Billy continue to polarize the issue. Never have I been against paying a guy for his value. I think teams should find an average QB and pay him average QB money. Maybe they get lucky and find a steal a la Jake Delhomme. At least I can make an argument. Can you give me ONE SINGLE reason to justify Brooks\' $36 million salary? Please, show me why Brooks is in fact worth that much to this team. $1,000 says he skirts the issue. Any takers? |
