When Brees breaks Marino's record, is an asterisk warranted?
1 Attachment(s)
Like Marino, Brees is using pinpoint accuracy to shred defenses," Freeman writes. "Unlike Marino, Brees is doing it with liberal rules that leave defenses playing with one hand tied behind their back. In effect, Brees' record will be severely watered down. So much so, that it almost deserves an asterisk."
A statement like that might cause a voodoo spell to be cast upon Freeman down in New Orleans. Outside of The Big Easy, though, and definitely in Miami, some will understand his point of view. Freeman goes on to write that the 1980s are vastly different than today's NFL, making Marino's record more astonishing. NFL.com news: When Brees breaks Marino's record, is an asterisk warranted? |
Yea... but I don't know anybody who actually cares.
|
Yes.
To Dan Marino's name. Stating that he passed for these yards against sluggish, inferior 1984 defenses. Alaska* |
Should Jim Brown's rushing achievements have an asterisk since they ran all the time back then?
|
Dempsey did it with 1/2 a foot. It was so easy to watch Saints all time highlights in 1980.

Di Di Di!!
Yep the game is going to be different in every era & every few years when something new comes along. So what...? Is there an asterik next to Brady's TD record? |

this is BS |
Asterisks is for baseball.
The game changes... it always has changed. Records fall... |

I think what that punk meant was #1. There will always be doubters.

Settle down people. The fool that wrote this had nothing more in mind than stirring up this kind of BS. The best way to respond is not to respond. Then this idiot can go back to (a) writing something meaningful or (b) confirming whether or not you want fries with your big mac.

No. Leagues change. That's just the way it is. What Brees is about to do doesn't take anything away from what Marino did. They are both incredible accomplishments. Hell, you'd have to put an asterisk next to every record in every sport.
|
Yeah. Put an asterisk against EVERY sporting record - better physiological science, better medics, better this, better that.
But heck when I last looked there were a couple of QBs who weren't getting anywhere close to a record. |
Oh please. There should be an asterix next to Marino's record, too, since he benefitted from 1979-79 rule changes that outlawed contact with a receiver past five yards of the line of scrimmage, the rule change that prohibited crackback blocks on receivers; and the rule that instructed officials to quickly whistle a play dead when a quarterback was clearly in the grasp of a tackler. Advantages which dudes like Unitas, Kenny Stabler, Y.A. Tittle and Fran Tarkenton never had. In Unitas' day you could do anything you wanted to the receiver after 5 yards, including knock him down, as long as the ball wasn't in the air to him.

Yes there will be an asterisk next to the Brees record.
*Brees threw for more yards in fewer games. Suck it! |
IF these idiot sports casters had their way they would put " and he's only 6ft"
by every record Drew breaks, he just never gets the kudos he deserves . |
Passing Yards Drew Brees* 2011
*also won Super Bowl that year |
Here's your asterisk: ***The Greatest Quarterback Ever***

Slow news day... zzzzzzzzzzz.

Definitely no asterisk. Players - Brees or Marino - aren't responsible for the conditions or rules they play under.
Yes you can make an argument that Marino's number is more impressive because he didn't have the QB-friendly rules or all the weapons Brees has. But records are records. Asterisks are for scandals or major cases of cheating. If anything is still unique about Marino's record, it was how young he was when he achieved it. |

also heard from marino last sunday that he has already conceded the record to drew and he's fine with it. like we give a $$$$ what he thinks. |

So go back and give him the Like. You know it makes sense. :bng: |
