Saints are playing better than Packers
 

The New Orleans Saints are better than the Green Bay Packers. That wasn’t true on Sept. 8, and it might not be true on Jan. 22, when they would, theoretically, meet in the NFC championship game. But I’m pretty sure it’s true right now.

I’m sure because I just watched the Saints tear the Atlanta Falcons to pieces Monday night, 45-16, to clinch the NFC South title. But that wasn’t the best story, and neither was Drew Brees throwing for his 5,087th yard to break Dan Marino’s single-season passing record. Those were both nice sidebars, but they were inevitable sidebars, and inevitable isn’t interesting.

What’s interesting is the playoffs and the possibility that the best team in the NFC at the moment might not be Green Bay, which is 14-1, already has home-field advantage wrapped up and owns a 42-34 victory over these same Saints in the first game of this season.

The Packers are the defending Super Bowl champions, flirted with perfection deep into December and have done nothing at all to indicate that they’re sliding. But if you stripped away the records and simply watched how the teams are playing now, well, the Packers haven’t looked as good as the Saints since probably Thanksgiving Day.

In that span of a month, the Packers had to come from behind in the fourth quarter to beat the Giants, blew out Oakland at home, lost to Kansas City and gave up 441 yards Sunday in a 35-21 victory over the Chicago Bears. The Saints? They blew out the Giants, Detroit and Minnesota and won at Tennessee — a far tougher schedule — before smacking yet another playoff team in the Falcons.

“I think this is our best December since this group has been together,” Saints offensive tackle Zach Strief said. “This is the kind of football you want to play right now. If you’re going to peak, this is the time you want to peak. That’s exciting for us.

I surly hope it plays out that way, I really want another crack at the Packers. I think Detroit will knock the Packers out first.

Actually thinking about the way the seeding now stands, if the NYgnats can beat the sowboys and make it in as the 4th seed and both of us win the wildcard round, I like NY's chances of taking down the puckers. Then we get NY again in the dome.

It would be great to have the NFCCG at home. But Det hasn't beat GB on the road in 20 years.

Green Bay is pretty much in the same situation as the Saints were back in 2009. They have it all wrapped up, and I guarantee you their intensity will pick up big time once the playoffs start. Yes, the Saints are playing better right now, but that for the most part is dog crap. Once the playoffs start, the Packers will be on their A game. As much as I love the Saints, they have limited ability in Lambeau, of course if they get there. The Saints have a long mountain to cross before that can happen.

Did you just see an 92 yard kick-off return from Sproles? Did you just see Shanle and Jenkins steal the ball from the Falcons and take it to the house?

Did you just see MN almost take out GB and KC actually do it?

Furthermore, call it naive optimism, but I suspect the Saints can match GB in "intensity" level. Did you see the love in the locker room after the game? If the Saints are going to get back to the SB anytime soon, this is the year, and I suspect everyone in that locker room knows it.

But Detroit hasnt been in the playoffs in 13yrs either. I feel If their is another NFC team (other than the Saints) that can "keep score" with GB its Detroit.

Home field has a great advantage for the home team but the Saints, in my opinion, have the better team. Better o-line, better run game, similar WR's, TE's and QB's on offense.

The Saints have better special teams (thanks Sproles) and I believe that the Saints defense is better at stopping the run. The Packer's back seven is better than the Saints, though.

If the Saints meet the Packers in Lambeau, they have a terrific opportunity for success. If the weather is poor the Saints superior running game is favored.

And whodatcat, Matthewt has been around awhile. Don't be too quick to question his loyalties.

After the Seattle loss, they came over to our boards and just ripped us. I haven't let them forget it.

They were blaming the Monday night loss on the refs. I called them class-less and said Atlanta is NOLA's poor step-sister. Guess I should have said what I really thought: Atlanta's fan base is as big a pu$$y as their team and their coach. :-)

It's not a big deal Who Dat Cat. MathewT is trying to say how anyone is playing right now doesn't mean anything if they lose in the playoffs. AND Green Bay has the intensity that the Saints had in 2009 which is a strong case. We did have the momentum and we were unstoppable.

I don't think he's trying to be antagonistic. He's definitely a loyal Saints fan.

The article doesn't get off to a good start when it says Packers had to come from behind in the 4th quarter to beat NYG. They didn't. Packers never trailed in the 4th quarter in all that 19 game win streak.

Well sure but the Lions do actually play the Pack every year. So that's 20 straight losses on the road.

EDIT: Maybe it's 19 straight losses but you probably get the point.

Looks like it will be 49ers vs. the Saints. Hopefully stlouis can knock off the 49ers the way they did the Saints so we can get home field advantage. Of course this is all assuming the Saints dont fall apart again and either lose to Detroit or Atlanta in the playoffs. If Atlanta gets the 5th seed they will play either Dallas or Newyork and assuming they beat either of those teams would then go onto Greenbay to play the Pack. Since Atlanta is playing Tampa and Detroit is playing Greenbay, I will bet you that Atlanta moves to the number 5 seed. This would place an already very angry footbal team in the Detroit Lions against us once again at home in the Dome. On the flip side of this if Sanfrancisco loses on Sunday to Stlouis that would then give us the first round bye and the Lions would have to play the Niners first. I sure hope we can win against Carolina on Sunday and Stlouis smashes the Niners. This would give us one more week to either prepare for the Niners or the Lions. In addition to that Atlants would be playing against either Newyork or Dallas in Newyork or Dallas. Im going with Newyork on that one. Long story short Atlanta makes it to Lambeau and the Niners make it to the Dome. NFC championship possibly between the Saints and the Falcons? Hmmmmm....that one would be alot of fun to watch.
