Darren Sproles, New Orleans Saints
Darren Sproles, New Orleans Saints
Possibly lost in the hoopla surrounding the impressive record-breaking passing season of Drew Brees was the dynamic impact of Sproles, signed in the offseason as a free agent from the San Diego Chargers. Sproles' finale against the Panthers was indicative of his overall season performance, making plays as a runner, receiver and return specialist. With 111 all-purpose yards, Sproles set a new NFL record with 2,696 all-purpose yards (1,383 via returns, 710 receiving and 603 rushing). Sproles scored 10 touchdowns for a team that set a new record for most total yards in league history. NFL.com news: Who went above and beyond the call of duty this season? |
Lost in the hoopla to everyone but us Saints fans!
Kid is an absolute beast of a football player! |

I really don't care, because this guy is a great football player. |
Contract is all I can think of; he wanted to play for a winner and restructured?
|
He is not a charger cause the Chargers tried to lowball him. Sproles was looking for a multi year deal and got it with the Saints. Smith wasnt going to give him a multi year deal. Rivers and Turner did not want this guy to leave.
As a huge Sproles fan, Im very happy he ended up in N.O. Payton uses him so much better than Turner ever did. |
And amazingly Norv is keeping his job. Unreal.
|
My understanding is that one thing that happened is Brees lured him in the off season. Guess they worked out together or practiced together. Something like that.
|
Another fantastic decision by A.J Smith which benefited us, just like when he let that guy go called.....brees is it? Lmao
|
Only lost in the hoopla as far as the major tv networks go. They are well aware of his accomplishments and giving Sprolesy plenty of love on Sirius NFL radio.

Sproles = best free agent acquisition of 2011 in the NFL.
Sproles would've stayed in San Diego if they would've offered him a multi year deal, as mentioned above, after he realized he wasn't getting it - he started to look elsewhere. It was between the Eagles and the Saints, and in the end I believe it was more down to the playing style of the Saints - which is designed for a complimentary scat back - that made Sproles sign with the Saints. Naturally that time spent over the summer training with Brees helped, but San Diego was his first choice, and Smith is so dumb for letting him go. |
