Nunyo Demasio, of the Washington Post, reports sources familiar with the situation said the Washington Redskins could trade down from the No. 5 pick in April's NFL draft and target a defensive end as the team searches for a pass-rush specialist. However, the team could wait for salary-cap casualties after June 1 as well.



how would you guys feel about giving the redskins darren howard for the no 5 overall pick? the only good defensive ends in this years draft slated as top guys are the ohio state kid, and marquise hill of LSU, so i think that they would jump at the chance to get howard

Udeze (out of USC) is the top DE. He should go in the top 10 or 15. The Skins may target him by only trading down a few spots.

Marquise Hill may not even go first round. Odom is rated higher than him on most draft boards.

The Redskins would never trade such a high pick for Howard but IF they would, I say go for it. Howard is good, but for the #5 overall pick...he can go.

ahhh yes are correct about udeze, i completely forgot about him, maybe its cuz USC sucks a$$ , but as for hill he can go anywhere from late first to early 3rd, i would say depending on how he performs at his pro day

LMAO... you wrote this thread just to get a dig in on USC didn\'t ya. LOL. I don\'t think moving up to number 5 is the right thing to do. We are going to have a solid if not great draft with the picks we got. Why trade up and lose them for a 5 pick? I seriously doubt Manning will be there at 5. LOL.

I don\'t see anything here that says we have to trade draft picks. It says, trade Darren Howard for the #5 overall pick.

I don\'t think trading to #5 would be to get Eli. I think we could trade up there and then trade down 5 spots (to houston, who wants sean taylor) to pick up a couple more picks and take Udeze at 10 to replace Howard. Or we could just draft Sean Taylor at 5...eitherway, we win. Too bad none of this has a chance of happening.

I may be wrong, but I don\'t even see Howard as being the best defender on our tem any longer. That\'s just a title that has stuck because no one has convincingly taken it over. My vote would be for Charles Grant and might (hopefully?) be Sullivan after 2004.

Be that as it may, I can\'t see a team trading down 13 spots in the 1st round for one player - especially not from 5 to 18. I\'d think that\'d have to be an elite and recognized player, which doesn\'t describe Howard.

Don\'t get me wrong, though. I think he\'s good bordering on great and we need him on the DL. Some of you have to remember that this is not Madden 2004 your playing here. If the Saints made a move like this and it turned out to be a bust, there\'d be no resetting and starting over.

The way I read it pak is proposing a straight up trade Howard for the #5 pick, without giving up our #18.
Say we have to give up our first round pick and Howard for the 5th pick overall, then trade that pick to the Texans for their #10 and #40 (a deal that\'s actually favorable for the Saints according to the Draft Value Chart - http://footballcorner.bizland.com/DraftValueChart.jpg). We draft Udeze at 10 to replace Howard.
So basically we have replaced Howard by Udeze and moved down from #18 to #40. How exactly will that make the Saints team better?
I don\'t even like a straight-up trade (plus I doubt the Redskins would go for it). Keep the few above average defensive players on this team please. The draft isn\'t the remedy.

You\'re right. That is what Pak suggested. I\'m saying they wouldn\'t go for a swap of 1st rounders and Howard. Why would they trade that pick straight up for him? In the \'99 draft we swapped 1st rounders and gave them all our remaining \'99 picks plus our 1st and 3rd picks in \'00. That was to move up just 7 spots. Does anyone really think they\'d give up picking in the first round in \'04 for D. Howard? I think history says no. I think the draft value charts would say no as well but I haven\'t been able to locate it online (little help, here!).

There are teams willing to trade multiple first rounders for one player. (Dallas sending 2 first round picks to Seattle for Galloway.) I thought the Galloway move was stupid whenI first heard about it and it proved to be stupid. I just don\'t see Howard commanding that type of interest.

Why would anyone want to trade our \"franchise\" player for an unproven rookie? Darren Howard is one of the best defenders we have. Why trade him to create another need on defense. He didn\'t have a good year cause he was hurt half the year and then he played with a cast on for the rest of the year. He is still young and he is very talented. It seems no matter who it is, people seem to want to trade them after one bad year when they don\'t put up Pro Bowl type numbers. It\'s the same for Stallworth. We should be building our D around someone like Howard. That\'s just me
