A couple names for late round picks
Since nobody's thrown some names out yet, I'll put in a bid from a few of my fellow alumnus. Now, this comes with the two caveats: one, that I don't watch a lot college football to scout for the Saints (they don't pay me enough to do that ;-) ), I only watch my own alma maters, Virginia Tech and Arizona State. So I'm not saying these are the best two players out there, but they're good players and they'll probably be around after the 2nd round. Caveat two, it's 4:30 in the morning and I can't sleep, so maybe I'm not thinking right.
Jayron Hosely of Virginia Tech: 9 interceptions a year ago. Only 3 this year, but I don't think he's taken a step back, it's just that Georgia Tech, UNC, and East Carolina (not in our conference, but we seem to play them every year) hardly threw it this year. It seems our whole conference fell in love with the triple-option. But still had 33 tackles and 2 forced fumbles this year. And because Tech horribly underperformed, he'll probably still be on the board in the 3rd or even 4th. Vontaze Burfict of Arizona State: Now, hear me out on this one. Don't just go by what the media says. 69 tackles, 7 for a loss (4 for a loss of 15 or more), 3 sacks. Only 1 pick, but he flies to the ball. Now, the knock on him is his attitude. He gets flagged for unsportsman like just for not saying "bless you" when someone sneezes. I've seen almost every game, and honestly, at least a third if not half of his flags were complete "let's clean up the sport" BS! Either the hit was like a second after the whistle or a toe out of bounds, or both guys were going at it and he gets the flag. But we also had an over-the-hill coach that been stopped giving a dang. I think Payton can get him to behave. However, because of his rep, teams out of fear that another Suh or Harrison will hurt more than help the team (especially image-wise for teams more desperate to fill seats than win games), I think everyone will pass on him. I saw one projection that said Steelers take him in the 2nd, but I think he'll fall all the way to 4th or 5th, unless he has the world's slickest talking agent. If he falls that far, I say take him. |

draft talk is meaningless untill after free-agency starts.
We always address holes in free agency then draft BPA. |
I want 2 bad a$$ DT's , that will make things so much easier.

G504,
I'm a Virginia Tech Alum as well! Class of 2000, when were you there? I agree, I think Hosley would be a good get for us; especially since, like you say, he'll probably be there late in the draft as The Hokies (sort of rightfully) probably won't get much respect by scouts... I'd also think Danny Coale might be good for us. He's not a huge name but he is a good, fairly large receiver but is also pretty versatile; he can return kicks and even punt! I could see him being used in special packages and "trick" plays... |

I want Linebackers that can sack the QB. You know, one of the things LB's are known for.?.?.?

The Sugar Bowl still makes me want to cry a little. I only care about two teams: The Saints and The Hokies. I don't watch basketball, baseball, hockey, any of that stuff. To have both of my teams end their seasons the way they did...it sucks. I can't think of a better word for it. |

Round 2 - OLB Round 2 - OLB Travis Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma Height: 6-2. Weight: 232. Projected 40 Time: 4.50 Can play either SLB or WLB Matt Reynolds, OT, BYU maybe? I am torn on this pick Round 3 - DT/DE Derek Wolfe, DE/DT, Cincinnati Height: 6-5. Weight: 302. Projected 40 Time: 4.92 Flexibility to play either a 3-4 or a 4-3 defense. Round 4 - DE to groom Jake Bequette, DE, Arkansas Height: 6-4. Weight: 271. Projected 40 Time: 4.62 Potiental for improvement is there. Converted TE is a plus Round 5 - Massive RT/OG Alex Hurst, OT, LSU Height: 6-6. Weight: 340. Projected 40 Time: 5.19 Want to get the running game to improve. this would be a steal in round 5 Round 6a. Washington → New Orleans (PD) - OLB Dexter Heyman OLB, Louisville Height: 6-3. Weight:238. Projected 40 Time: 4.57 Athletic linebacker that flashes skill making plays sideline to sideline. Talk about a talented project. wish i could find more tape on him. Well worth the 6th round pick to develop. Instant hit on special teams. 6b - Blocking TE Michael Williams, TE, Alabama Height: 6-6. Weight: 270. Projected 40 Time: 4.77 I really would be shocked if he is here in the sixth, He has better hands than most would think. A bulldozer of TE. I really want this player! Saints get one of the best traditional TE in recent drafts. I see his stock sky rocketing with combines and pro day work outs. Round 7 - Developmental Center Scott Wedige, C, Northern Illinois Height: 6-4. Weight: 314. Projected 40 Time: 5.18 I have watched the kid play a couple of times. I would love to see him there in the seventh but i believe he will go earlier but for now i have to go with pre draft rankings. Most do not mention him. Undetermined Pick: Miami → New Orleans (PD). Miami traded an undisclosed selection to New Orleans for running back Reggie Bush. The players I would love the saints to make a move on? Cam Johnson DE, Virgina no we have talked about a few others in the blog. some good names have been thrown around |
yeah, it would be nice to see a line backer or de make a sack instead of our strong saftey so he could stay in the secondary helping with pass coverage to keep us from getting burnt so much on these long passes.

Welcome back Hagan.

Great to have the info.....thanks.

I think the talk of a DE should be put on hold. The steal of last years draft will be ready to go after coming off of IR. Greg Romeus from Pitt should have been a first rounder, but his injury was just too much to give a high pick for. He is going to be healthy and hungry in 2012. Also, Martez Wilson showed improvement on the outside. I am leaning more towards an actual cover corner and a big DT so that we don't have to pay both Rogers and Franklin.

LOVE the ideas from this article: Time to look for Brees' heir apparent? - NFC South Blog - ESPN
Kellen Moore? Yes, please, especially after he gets to sit behind Drew for 3-4 years, learning how to 1) Play the position at a pro-level and, maybe more importantly, 2) be a leader both on and off the field. I know our biggest needs are on defense but Moore seems like a guy that would fit SO well into our system whenever Drew is ready to ride off into the sunset (hopefully not for a few years, at least). It seems like an opportunity too good to pass up. |

This is the LAST thing we need to worry about now. It shouldn't even be a thought. Chase has been here how long? Every time we see him (granted it's preseason) he looks decent. he is no Drew but who is. If we did what is suggested, the unlikely soul will just take over yo-yo duties on the practice squad. |

I still think the guy has a point, though. I honestly don't know much about Daniels. He seems like a very good backup for us right now; but is the team really going to expect Daniels to just sit for, what, 7 - 8 years (by the time Drew Retires) and then become our starter? For how many years? 3? 4? Why? Because he knows the system and looks good in pre-season? You know who else knew his team's system and looked decent in preseason? Curtis Painter. I'm not saying Moore is a lock to be our future QB even if he's our pick, I'm just saying it's worth thinking about if he's still around when we have our pick; getting a guy as talented as he is, that seems like he would fit our system so well, so low in the draft might not be an opportunity that presents itself again. He could sit for 3-4 years, benefit from having Drew as a mentor and give us 8 years or more as starting QB when his time comes. |

All i know is that we need to upgrade our linebackers and maybe our new defensive coordinator can put something together

Exactly! Last year was different because of the work stoppage, but this year teams are going into the draft knowing exactly what holes need to be filled with rookie talent. BTW, if the Ravens won't pick up Haloti Ngata's 10M option he'll be a UFA and another good reason to get rid of Smith's and Ellis' big salaries. Probably the best DT in NFL and would do wonders for the Saints' pass rush and run defense. |
