Friendship convinced Williams to leave Saints for Rams
1 Attachment(s)
Gregg Williams considers Jeff Fisher one of his best friends. When asked to join the St. Louis Rams' staff, he had to accept.
"I have a very close and tight circle of friends. Not many people get inside that circle," Williams said."He needed my help and I couldn't say no." Williams agreed to leave the New Orleans Saints, where he helped win a Super Bowl, to become Fisher's defensive coordinator in St. Louis. Williams has 22 years of coaching experience in the NFL, including six as Fisher's defensive coordinator with the Tennessee Titans. He left the 13-win New Orleans Saints for the two-victory Rams because of Fisher -- and says one of the things he likes most about Fisher is how cool he can be under fire. Yeah, like he was going to stay after that debacle with 40 seconds to go in the game anyway
Sean would kick his a$$ straight out the door anyway Thanks for the super bowl GW, Here comes steve SpagNOLA |
I kinda wonder what St. Louis is thinking now.....
" Oh NO!!!! We suck again!!!! " |
Yeah he left because of friendship.....his friend Sean was gonna' fire him!
|
Hey, I don't look a gift horse in the mouth
Goodbye Greg |
2 years straight of losing in the playoffs due to defensive breakdowns.... granted the offense committed turnovers but they compensated for it.
When there is that little time left in a game and your opponent is 80 yards from scoring, and the opponent is not run by an "elite" tier QB, the expectation is the defense can at least hold them short of a TD, hold them to a field goal, or stop them on downs entirely. Our defense made the 49ers look like the reincarnation of Joe Montana/Jerry Rice.... Later Gregg...... |
I wonder how much $ Fisher paid him to come to St. Louis.
|
To me , following SB44, our defense has had ZERO identity.
They sometimes do this.... They sometimes do this.... They sometimes do this.... I believe that our players found it impossible to find rhythm because of the lack of continuity. They were forced to over think, instead of playing within a consistent framework which allows comfort until the opportunity to make a play arrived. This season was comical to anyone that is not a Saints fan or a member of the Saints defense. BLITZ BLITZ BLITZ! It's like the dude was mailing it in, or like an addict: "It will be different this time!" Insanity. Bye Gregg..... |
I know Williams wasn't out on the field, but come on!
Tell your players to flaming mug the receivers and cough up an illegal contact / defensive holding penalty and live to play another down. Did Gregggggg not notice it was taking the 49ers 30+ seconds to make a 1st down after we went ahead on the JG score???? The clock and their offensive style played into our hands - until we had to get too cute blitzing. As much as we blitzed, we should have had 60 sacks this year. No, GW should have told the defense to keep everything in front of you and AT WORST yield a FG and try to outscore them in OT. |
Like I said before.
Coach Payton: I'm not going to fire you Gregg, but if your friend Jeff gets a head coaching job. I suggest you go. Williams: OK |
The past two years make me think 2009 was the Darren Sharper defense and not the Gregg Williams one.
Plus I think his scheme was fresh at that point, then everyone in the NFL figured out we could not get pressure without sending the house, and that's what we did upwards of 50% of the time. |
We need people on the front 4 that require extra attention.
|
I'm sure a lot of angry fans after that playoff lose helped him too.
|
Whatever helps him sleep at night.

The funny thing is that I thought Rogers and Franklin were just those two guys before the season started, and that the added attention to those guys would free up Ellis to have a career year - how wrong was I?! |
After 2 years of playoff losses in dramatic fashion and the way the D regressed it was time for a change. I could not imagine what our D would be like this year if he did not leave.

LoL at ya'll comments.
We will never know. ..who said what to whom, what really happened or could this what GWilliams said be real the truth and nothing but the truth. It turned out good for GWilliams that he had a great exit from the Saints and a great entrance to St.Louis Rams. Talk about perfect timing. I wish there was a perfect timing for something forn the Saints this month, nah, I won't go there. We are over "it." |
What do you mean we won't know what happened.
There was no contract offer from the Saints to GW. There was no talk most of the season about one and GW isn't totally dumb... he knows what that means. Fired. You don't get a contract offer and you don't have a job its essentially beign fired. |

Or is that the subtle difference between being "let go" and being "fired?" |

Both you don't have a job anymore and you're not getting a pay check anymore. There is no different. Yes you can still get unemployment if you are fired. |
Seemed to me that the last 2 years the D just didn't have the Ball Hawk mentality. Where were the turnovers like in 2009? We couldn't stop a 2010 SeaSquawks team that had no business being in the playoffs? And losing the the Nooners that way just hurt me, man. Then again, the D didn't turn the ball over 6 times, neither. For 2011 I kinda thought the D played OK with the level of talent they had.....
