Saints remove seven from Injured Reserve list
The New Orleans Saints made several roster moves Monday removing seven players from the Injured Reserve list. LB Jermiha Hunter (Achilles), WR Joseph Morgan (knee), K Garrett Hartley (Hip), T Charles Brown (Hip), LB Will Herring (MCL), RB Mark Ingram (Toe), and TE David Thomas (Concussion).
Hunter, a three-year starter for the Iowa Hawkeyes, was signed by the Saints early last year during a run on undrafted players. He had caught the eye of coaches during training camp, making plays, showcasing great instincts, and even nearly picking off a few passes when dropping into coverage. He was placed on injured reserve after he tore his Achilles tendon during practice after just a few weeks. The Saints are looking for play makers to flank Pro Bowl middle linebacker Johnathan Vilma at strong and weakside linebacker. New defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will be re-building the defense in order to improve on the units 24th ranking from last season, and Hunter could be one to keep an eye on this preseason. Undrafted receiver Joseph Morgan was another standout during the preseason games as it seemed the Saints had found a legitimate deep threat to compliment Devery Henderson. Morgan will have a shot to make the 53-man roster this season if he can stay healthy. Helping his chances are that wide receiver Marques Colston and Robert Meachem are both slated to become free agents, and with the impending contract of Drew Brees, the Saints may not have the cash to satisfy both. Tight end David Thomas has been a large role player for the Saints offense since being acquired from the Patriots prior to the 2009 season. A concussion suffered in week three kept him sidelined for most of the season before lingering symptoms forced his season to end. Ingram, one of two of the teams first round picks last year, was beginning to blossom as the teams primary back later in the season until a turf toe injury sent him to the bench in week 13. With three healthy running backs on the roster in Pierre Thomas, Darren Sproles, and Chris Ivory the Saints decided to play it safe with Ingram and shut him down for the season. Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over, over, and over again...and expecting a different outcome!
