Can the franchise tag be reused!
 

Say the Saints tag a player and a deal is struck with said player before the free agent period begins can they then re-issue the franchise tag to another player?

I'm not sure about that, but I doubt they would place the tag on a player until the last possible time to do so.

That is not true... you don't lose your tag unless the FA period begins.

Essentially if you tag someone today then and you end up signing him to a long term deal over night or tomorrow then you still keep your tag and can use it on another player.

You don't give up the tag until FA begins. This was actually done by NY Giants not that long ago.

I thought I remembered it that way. I wasn't sure if the new CBA changed that or not.

Didn't we lift the tag on somebody several years ago after we reached a multi-year deal?

Don't recall but I do recall the Titans doing it a couple of years ago as well.

I don't see the advantage of tagging someone early. I mean if a player being tagged is going to make say 10 million for one season how is dangling a 4 year deal where next year he'll make only say 4 million. PLEASE TAG ME!!!

Being tagged the day after the SB means nothing until FA begins...

I think there's a danger in that the player can sign the franchise, thereby locking it in. I think this happened to the Raiders one season.
