The New Orleans Saints will play in the preseason Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, on Aug. 5, a league source confirmed. As first reported by FOXSports.com, the Saints volunteered to play in this year's annual preseason opener because it will coincide with offensive tackle Willie Roaf's induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame that weekend.


The Saints' opponent is not yet known. By playing in the Hall of Fame Game, that means the Saints will play five preseason games this year. The rest of their preseason schedule will be announced at a later date.

The Saints last played in the Hall of Fame Game against the Pittsburgh Steelers to kick off the 2007 exhibition season.

Good for rookies is the point. We'll have an extra game to evaluate/develop the draft picks and UDFA's and get the defense accustomed to the new coaching staff.

This is a good thing. No one says Drew and the vets have to play any more snaps than they would in a 4 game pre-season.

Obviously the offense doesn't need the extra game, but it can only help the defense which hopefully will have quite a few new faces.

IIRC you're also allowed more players than normal on your roster (not 100% sure on that tho).

Isn't the roster limit at 80 during the preseason; until the first cut after the 3rd preseason game

I thought I remembered previous HOF participants were granted some extra spots, but I may be thinking of some other reason.

...and have played the opening game for the season three times now.
The Saints have a great appeal in the NFL. It's still unbelievable to an oldtimer like me. Everyone used to love making fun of me and the Saints. Not any more.

I take so much pride in that fact, that I am not smart enough to come up with the words to express how much joy it brings me to how relivent the Saints are now. It almost puts a "Stamp" on my fanhood and love for this team. I remember my childhood friends making fun of me because I was a Saints fan (They all rooted for the Cowboys back then). Now when I see them wearing something "Saints", I just give a little smile. When really, in my head, I am jumping up and down on their faces screaming, "I FREAKIN TOLD YOU SO, YOU BANDWAGONING DILLHOLE!!!!"

We like in a great time Saints fans. Our loyalty has paid off.

It's rumored we'll be playing the New York Giants in the first game of the season also.

Not a fan of preseason games think there sould be less instead of more or eliminated altogether. If the coaches cannot evaluate players other than by preseason games something is wrong here would rather see an 18 game season and drop two preseason games.
