Saints, Brees $5M/year apart on deal

According to Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole, the Saints and free agent Drew Brees remain "roughly $5 million a year apart" on a new contract.
That's a lot of ground to make up by Monday's franchise tag deadline. The Saints could free up $5 million by restructuring Will Smith's contract, and another $11 million by cutting MLB Jonathan Vilma and DT Sedrick Ellis. If the Saints are forced to use the exclusive franchise tag on Brees, they run the risk of losing both Marques Colston and Carl Nicks.

Vilma/Ellis, don't let the door hit you in the a$$ on your way out!!

5 million per year?

You have to be kidding me. You know Manning's contract was propbably the template. Are you telling me Brees wants 5 million more per year than Manning made?

We're getting prison raped.

Say bye-bye to ever upgrading our defense.

I heard yesterday that the Saints are offering 20-21 million and Condon was asking 24+

I'd tell Condon to shove it up his A$$.

21 Million, take it or we franchise Brees.

So much for that crap Drerw spewed about wanting to keep the team together.

No way Cole is correct.

I'm sure he is correct based on what I heard not from him. Condon has a way of milking things for what it's worth.

However, Brees if he meant what he said, should step in and should have stepped in awhile ago and taken what the Saints were offering. I think 21 is plenty since Manning turned down 20.

Anything over 23 and the Saints are non-playoff team based on what our cap we have to work with is.. A lot of veterans will be gone, anytime someone demands money they're gone because we can't match...

Sad.

24mil+ per year
I don't know what to say about that if true.
I mean its Bress and all but I have a hard time thinking any one player is worth 20% of the entire teams payroll. If this is the true say goodbye to Vilma, Ellis, Colston, Nicks and Porter.

I do find this hard to believe. We currently have 20mil in cap space so if Bress wants 24mil he must know he is taking money away from everyone else...

I know this is overreacting to a situation we know nothing about at the moment but my opinion of Bress as person could change quite a bit.

I know I am crazy but for 24mil per year (which would cripple the franchise in the future) sign Manning for less and retain our FAs... I know I am nuts what am I thinking...

20mil to work with

Solution:
Tag Bress-- This pays him 14mil per year

Restructure with Smith which frees 5mil
Cut Ellis freeing 6mil

That leaves enough money to sign Colston and Nicks. If Bress is unhappy so be it this isn't baseball where teams get a slap on the wrist for going over the cap.

According to Pro Football Talk... "According to a report from Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports, Loomis thinks Brees is very good, but not great. And therefore Loomis thinks Brees’s new contract should be commensurate with what a very good quarterback, but not a great quarterback, gets paid."

Maybe it shouldn't be "In Loomis We Trust."
