Why did brees turn down the contract we offered him?
Its really something I don't understand....the guy that wanted a team friendly deal and is not known as greedy guy turns down the chance to be the highest paid player in the NFL because it was 6 mil off what he wanted?
Whys he suddenly being picky, sudden feeling of greediness. Its really made me second guess him for some reason. All the years up to this I knew brees was the best player and still IS the team, but I find this disappointing that we hes being picky and won't accept the 18 mil, wish I could afford to be that choosy I'd have a heart attack if someone offered me 18 mil What do you guys think? |
Because Tom Condon is his agent, who has been banned by the Patriots. They won't speak to any players that have Condon as their agent.
That should tell you all you need to know. |
His agent is the same as Payton Manning's agent (Condon).
One of the biggest flaws in Payton's contract was he got hurt a year after he signed his "MONSTER CONTRACT" and the Colts forced him to restructure it. Brees wants a large chunk of the money "front loaded" to prevent that. In the end, Condon is representing Brees, and agents are NOT concerned about a "team friendly" contract... PERIOD. Condon specializes in making players the HIGHEST PAID players in the league at any one time. That's why I never believed all the hype and think it's all fan damage control by Drew Brees. |
I think they better keep negotiating, I have a sinking feeling Goodell may strip them of the the franchise tag there using on him in which case they tag never happen and every one we have will be allowed to hit the open market.
|
Regardless he is a representative of Bress and if the agent is doing something Drew viewed as unbecoming or rather not representative of his wishes why not can the guy. Brees deserves to be payed well but he also deserves part of the blame regarding this situation.

I don't think Goodell will do that................However kiss your #1 draft pick goodbye in 2013! JMO. Along with suspensions and Money in 2012(Vilma comes to mind) Quote in the Charlotte paper today. Steve Smith "I WOULD NOT EXPECT ANYTHING LESS FORM THOSE GUYS!" Coming from a guy who punched out his own team-mates! LMAO. |

Oh, you mean those criminals and bounty hunters? ;-) |
I read somewhere,in all this mountain of reading,so don't know where, but I think the franchise tag rules are part of the CBA and can't be lifted.
Also,I think there's got to be some reason drew would turn down the offer,it does seem out of character. |

Ok, let's look at the tag another way. I'm not sure exactly how the amout applied to salary caps works but I would assume with the tag at say 14.5 million all of that would apply to the cap since it is a one year deal. How much of a 90 or 100 million deal would count against the cap this year? Maybe Drew will accept the tag to allow enough cap space to sign the other guys. What do you guys think?
|
I don't know if it could be any less with Brees' side reportedly wanting a front-loaded contract, which would place a lot of the guaranteed money on the initial years of the contract.
It would depend on the actual base salary and the designated portions of any bonuses included in the contract. |
I've said this before, he's got another child on the way. That could really make him look at life differently. Priorities.

To be the highest paid employee in your professiopn in the entire world isn't adequate? What exactly are his priorities? Dictatorship? World dominance? Liberal Politician? |

Again, what is the difference between 18 million and 23 million dollars?
Smart@$$ answer of 5 million aside - I'd rather have 18 million and make sure my best receiver and lineman are still on my team along with some help on defense so I can win one, maybe two more championships... |

Maybe greed !

I don't know.... As with the bounty thing, maybe there is more to it, than what we are being told....

Might be worse. sack totals rise and Bress maybe carted of the field because he was gunned for. oppps there is the bounty ideology thing again. remember the best way to get to Drew is up the middle not off the ends.
besides we should get a nice comp pick for the players we are about to say goodbye too. |
That depends on who the Saints can sign to replace them from the FA pool, whether or not Roger Rabbit decides to take away any potential comp picks.
|
Unbelievable that they could not get a deal done.

Remember when $450,000 was a lot of money?
It's raining cats, dogs, squirrels, & monkeys...what else is waiting in the wings this year? I believe the tag helps this years cap, but the long deal is going to leave us thin. Restructuring and cuts will have to be made and next year has no real advantage. Once success shows up, the players that bring that success will demand their rewards. No team has enough money to reward everybody. We are no different. Brees deserves his money; he's earned it. Everybody else look out for yourself. Things should level out once all the teams get up to the cap/minimum salary range. Teams like KC will be able to buy a whole new look. All the rest will have to pick through the scraps to see what their remaining dollars will buy. |
I've been telling you guys for weeks and I kept getting called chicken little, Drew is a Family man first, a union man second and a team member third. He is going to do what is best for his family first...period, what's best for the union second, and what's best for the team third. He's already a hall of famer. He has damn near every record that can be set by a quarterback. What's next? A big ass pay-day, that's what. Don't get me wrong, I love Drew Brees, and I hope he stays in New Orleans forever, but he didn't dream of playing in the NFL his whole life so he could play in the NFL. He dreamed of playing in the NFL his whole life so he could get rich, just like every other player in the NFL. It's time to pay up.

And that is basically what the salary cap is for - to keep the whole league fairly competitive among all 32 teams. Since successful teams can't hold on to all of their star players - draft picks, UDFAs and evaluation of potential FA signings becomes more important. A team doesn't need to sign the highest payed FA in a given position, just the FA who provides the most value and fits the team's system. This is where the Patriots and BB have and will continue to be successful, and where Loomis has also shown his abilities. The fact that the new CBA brought down the draft pick salaries, especially for the 1st round picks, will help teams to concentrate more on building their success through the draft. |
