Bounty System Stemmed From Fans Lust For Violence

Listening to the indignation by the public and most especially the sports media world as they condemn the behavior of the Saints players and coaches, it's hard not to hear some hypocrisy. To be sure, the league has presented the game over the years as a show of hard knocks, where athlete warriors wage their fight. And, young athletes, like I was in the 1970's, grow up striving for that moment they make the highlight reel.

No, it's the players greed for money. They make hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars but need an extra $100 to do what they already get paid for. There isn't a love for the game anymore, it's the love for money which I understand but come on don't you want to win or are you only in the game for the money?

Exactly, it's like us poor guys betting a quarter a hole playing golf. This is nothing money to them.

I don't think it's as simple as that.

If you were working for nothing but your salary but had the opportunity to make a bonus if you could wouldn't you try?

If an Interception fell into your lap and you got 500 bucks and braggin rights would you not do it?

I'm not for intentionally targeting someone in a dirty way but if a clean hit resulted in a player carted off the field and it's part of the game...i'd collect.

Games are played over a boot and braggin rights. Is it inconcievable that cash wouldn't ever be involved?

I have to respectfully disagree. These guys are already making millions of dollars, a few hundred or a thousand doesn't motivate them to perform at a higher level. As Danno pointed out, it's players having fun, wagering, gambling. It's a rough sport and yes, it is kinda' morbid to raise it to the level of offering payments for an injury, but the reality is any of their careers could end on a single play. The Bounty program is how they deal with it.

Believe it or not, these small incentive payments, awarded at meetings where primarily the defensive players are viewing tape from the previous game, are referred to as "stripper money" because they are viewed as being small and insignificant, like a stack of one-dollar bills you'd take into a strip club.
