Drew not willing to sign Franchise tender
Drew Brees doesn
The Saints have placed the exclusive franchise tag on Drew Brees, which means he’s not allowed to negotiate with any other team, and therefore his only leverage in negotiations is the threat that he simply won’t sign at all. And Brees sounds like he’s ready to use that leverage. Brees said on Mike and Mike in the Morning that after signing the one-year franchise tender with the Chargers in the 2005 season, only to suffer a serious injury to his throwing shoulder at the end of that season, he’s in no mood to sign the one-year franchise tender again. Instead, Brees wants the Saints to commit to him for the long term. “I’ve played under the franchise tag before, back in 2005, and that ended with 13 anchors in my right shoulder and a 25 percent chance of playing football again,” Brees said. “That didn’t work out too well for me. I’ve talked to the Saints about this many times. They definitely know my desire to have a long-term deal, and hopefully they want me to have that as well. We will continue discussions and hopefully get a long-term deal done.” Brees is making the promotional rounds as part of an endorsement deal, but he sounded like he wasn’t particularly thrilled to be talking about his contract — and not particularly thrilled that his contract is still an issue after he and the Saints’ brass had said repeatedly during the season that they fully expected a deal to get done. Brees did, however, express some optimism. “I’m still hoping that we can get something done sooner than later,” Brees said. But if they don’t get something done, the Saints better not count on Brees reporting for the one-year franchise tender. Not really news, but it's newer non-news..... |
Well nicks has reached an agreement with the bucs, meachem has gone, that's got to free up some cap space? Get sed Ellis to restructure if possible
|
The franchise tag had nothing to do with the injury. Sorry Drew. I'm not biting on that one.
As for the Saints committing, they've tried to, twice, with very VERY VERY rich offers. Drew won't sign them. He doesn't have a long term deal as of today and it is nobody's fault but his own. I'm not hating. This is just the reality of how things stand. |
I am not worried about Drew. Since he didn't sign his contract offer (the long term one), the Saints are now going to work around his franchise tag, and then decide how to structure the long term contract that he will eventually sign. As for Drew holding out, I doubt Tom Benson would let that happen.
|
His value is only going to drop if he holds out. He knows it, his agent knows it and Loomis knows it.
Maybe we should cave in and offer him a contract that makes him the highest paid player in the entire NFL. Oh wait, WE ALREADY DID...TWICE!!! |
I don't care about all that. I heard him on Mike and Mike this morning and he sounded sad. The contract thing will be worked out, but I think an unhappy Brees would be an underperforming Brees. We need to cheer this man up.
|
I think he was sad because he was asked about the witch hunt the Saints are dealing with, since he wasn't a part of it my guess he is tired of having to answer questions about it
|
...and the horse he rode in on.
|
Well, with Nicks gone; I don't see what the freakin problem is, NOW.
Surely, they can take $5 Million frrom what they were going to give Carl and give it to Drew. I think that would make it the 3rd time the Saints have offered him the richest contract in the NFL. |
I totally agree with the way Loomis is handling this. Sign guys who are willing. When the cap starts really tightening, Drew will be forced to sign for whatever is available, or walk.
I like the fact that we are making moves that are right for the team and disregarding the strong-arm tactics being used by Drew and Condon. |
I do too, Rocky.
Business as usual. Sign players we need; "Drew, there's the contract". Keep doing what you are doing Micky! |
This is a sad, annoying subject for me. Watching Bobby Hebert hold out years ago because the Saints wanted to give him a "hometown discount" I could understand that one. But Brees has no excuse here as we've offered him the most we've ever offered a player (or almost anyone else in the NFL has been offered).
Drew needs to get that front-loading of the contract crap out of his head. If he plays 2 or 3 years on the current contract and gets injured, he'll have more than enough to retire on. Come on Drew, be reasonable. |
Thank you HALO.
That is the thing that just drives me crazy about this deal. If we were offering him Kyle Orton Money, I could see his displeasure with the FO. But man, they have thrown a lot of money at him. I may get bashed for this, but I'm going to say it anyways: Drew, Sean Payton made you great. In all aspects of your game (with the help from Mickey), other than throwing the ball for you. I love you dude. But you're killin me. You're goshdarn KILLIN ME! |

I hope they don't look at the crazy deal Detroit just gave Calvin Johnson...7 yrs/132 M for a receiver?!?!? Im sooo glad we got the Colston deal done too. I have faith that Loomis will make Brees happy!

He could fall down the stairs at home today and never play again. He still gets the moolah. Not bad. |

How does that sound to you? Biggest deal in the NFL, right? But, here is the catch ... years four and five are not guaranteed. If you get injured or retire you get nothing. |

This is sad folks.:( |
I would be sad, too.
The thought that my great grandchildren might have to work would be so discouraging, I might not be able to complete a pass. |
1. Trim the fat on defensive and Jahri's contracts. 2. Put aside $14-16 million for Drew (tag) 3. Sign Chase 1 yr in case all hell breaks loose - $1M. 4. Make a "respectable" offer to Nicks, take it or leave it 5. Sign Colston WITHOUT a bidding war! 6. Re-load on defense, LBs, pass rushers, in draft & free agency (coming soon). 7. After that, every dollar that's left in the pot in June/July, goes back into the final Brees deal, which he WILL sign. I'm really not worried about what all these people are speculating about. ESPECIALLY now that Nicks is gone, I think that is part of what Brees was waiting for.
|
If it's true that the Saints offered Drew 18 and he wants 23, then you have to decide whether he is worth it. At that price, I would say no too.

The thing that I can't wrap my mind around is that 15+20+25= 60 million. Who can't live off that for the rest of their lives? That includes family members. For lands sake; interest alone will let him never...NEVER worry about money again. I understand they live in a different world than we do. I understand they are the best in the world at what they do and that it could all be gone in one play. But Delta Force, Special Forces, SEALS, Force Recon, Rangers and TAC -P Soliders are the best of the best of the best in the Armed Forces; and they will never make that kinda money in three years. And they are far more important than a football player is. I understand it comparing apples and pears; but damn. When is enough, enough? It makes me glad I am middle class, I guess. At least I know I can live on my 70K a year job. *EDIT* Oh and when we as Soldiers get hurt; which has been a hell of a lot in the past 11 years.... we get cut loose and sent to the VA for treatement. |
If you aren't willing to sign your tender and continue to negotiate a longer deal, then get your behind along with your crappy agent into Loomis' office and get negotiating. There's zero reason to drag this out and make it a prolonged process. Both sides know all the details to the premiere quarterbacks deals in the league that which gives both sides the foundation to build Drew's deal on.
Save some face and stop vilifying yourself Drew. You want to be here. We want you here... and there's plenty of money on the table for you. |
We will be happy again. Drew will sign a long term deal within the next few weeks. After he explained the franchise tag with the Charges, I now understand why he doesn't want to sign anything but a long term deal. The word is they are waiting to see what Manning gets. However they should keep in mind that Manning has had 9 straight playoff appeances, multiple MVPs & has been to 2 super bowls one 1-1. To date Drew has not been able to win a playoff game on the road. The question they need to ask each other is that should Drew be paid higher than Manning. Drew deserves a great deal. I love him and want him to stay & be happy.
Is it time to play money ball? |
I understand him not wanting to sign the tender. It didn't work out for him last time. However, he could sign one of those contract offers.
