One thing that Loomis has been consistently great at with the Saints is structuring contracts in a creative way as to not take up a ton of cap room.

Rugby Saint II 03-15-2012 08:57 PM

It's going to be a busy weekend. Payton and company need to rest up.

saintsfan601 03-15-2012 09:34 PM

Hawthrone that's who I want.

alleycat_126 03-15-2012 10:47 PM

We get Younger and more stout at the linebacker positions this team gon be hard to deal with Lofton and Hawthorne for me.

|Mitch| 03-15-2012 10:59 PM

can we afford signing 2 LBs? Even if we release Vilma we gotta be getting close to the cap and we still have Drew long term to worry about?

QBREES9 03-15-2012 11:16 PM

What a business season this has been. Talk of Johnny (THE HIT MAN) Vilma being let go.

Danno 03-16-2012 08:14 AM

Ellis, Vilma, Shanle, Herring = 11 million.

228jits 03-16-2012 08:33 AM

Lofton before Hawthorne. Bring in both and I will be more than satisfied!!

TheOak 03-16-2012 08:34 AM

As long is it is not coming from my account... I really dont care.

Tobias-Reiper 03-16-2012 09:14 AM

I believe the Saints have bought the DeBartolo Sports Money Management Program for 4 easy payments of $49.98 + shipping and processing

saintfan 03-16-2012 12:22 PM

I think there's a Saints tax on Gasoline which is where some of the money is coming from. It's less than a penny a gallon, but it adds up. LOL

Restructure Ellis' contract, if he's unwilling, give him the boot. The rest should probably just go. As much as I love vilma and all he's done for us, it just doesn't look like its in the cards for him to stay. Unless he gets away without a lengthy suspension and is willing to restructure as well. Seems clear they wanna get younger at lb though and I don't see him being cool with a diminished role here when some other team will probably be willing to overpay for his services and give him a starting gig.. as for shanle, I've been in his corner since he got here. I respect his tenacity and that he has given us his all, but if the ol tank wasn't already running low, surely it is by now. As I've said before though I'd like to see him stick around in some sort of coaching role.. herring was a disappointment, get rid of him, nuff said.

On July 5, 2010, Russell was arrested at his Mobile, Alabama home for being in possession of codeine syrup without a valid prescription.[40] His arrest was the culmination of a two-month investigation that did not initially target Russell, but his name and address surfaced repeatedly during the investigation.[41] Russell was bailed out, and a bond hearing was scheduled for July 7, 2010. At his July 20, 2010 arraignment, Russell pleaded 'not guilty' to a state felony charge of possession of a controlled substance.[42] On October 29, 2010, a Mobile County grand jury declined to indict Russell on the charge of possession of codeine syrup without a prescription.[43] By at least one account, the arrest severely diminished his prospects of catching on with another NFL team.[31]

In an interview with ESPN's Colleen Dominguez, Russell stated that he tested positive for codeine after he was selected by the Raiders in the 2007 NFL Draft.[44]

You ask "Where's the money coming from"? Very easy, it is coming from the future.

Right now the Saints are still legit Super Bowl contenders. At this point Loomis is wise to keep pushing the cap dollars back as far as he can. Eventually, the price needs to be paid. Give it about 2 seasons and the Saints will have to go into a full rebuild mode.

I know this is an older thread. When I saw this it made me think of Steve McNair. HE was a great man is greatly missed.

SaintsBro 03-23-2012 10:45 AM

"where is the money coming from?"

It is pretty obvious -- the Saints are preparing for massive suspensions on defense, and if they are signed, some of those new guys will be paid by money that is NOT being paid to suspended players. I would not be surprised at all, if there are massive sweeping cuts of players on defense this off season, a huge house-cleaning, cutting the players who may be facing long unproductive suspensions next season; and then signing their replacements with more "cap friendly" contracts (bonuses, delayed payments, etc) and just eating the cap hits of the people who got cut, but not paying the salaries. At least that's how I interpret it. I think the Saints may have an idea of who is going to be suspended, but not for how long. And now that they saw what happened to Payton with the harsh penalties (entire year) they are probably looking at re-tooling the whole defense, bracing for long suspensions of players far worse than what they might have anticipated from Goodell previously. They will probably have to part ways with some of them.

No Doubt!!! LOL

Marlboro Man 03-23-2012 12:20 PM

Well, look on the bright side. On a positive note, Roman Harper will probably be suspended for the year too so we'll get some better play there.
