When did the Saints sign Broderick Buntley?

Brodrick Bunkley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

73Saint 03-19-2012 11:28 AM

didn't think we did. I did hear we had him in for a visit....

WhoDat!656 03-19-2012 11:32 AM

Not that it proves anything, but I looked up Peyton Manning and he is listed as a free agent.

Maybe someone at Wikipedia is a Saints fan?

FinSaint 03-19-2012 11:35 AM

It just hasn't been corrected by the mods. I doubt the news would first brake on Wikipedia.

73Saint 03-19-2012 11:35 AM

Am I missing something here? Where on Wiki does it say he is a Saint???

TheEnigma 03-19-2012 11:38 AM

Am I the only one who doensn't like this guy?

When I posted that 'link' earlier, it said he was a New Orleans Saint.

Apparently the Wikipedia verification team is back from lunch

It's been corrected now, it did state that he was a "defensive tackle for the New Orleans Saints of the NFL" yesterday.

I really haven't seen him play enough to have formed an opinion of him, but some of the things I've read about him in the last couple of days have been encouraging. I like the fact that he came into the league to play in a Jimmy Johnson system, and Spags having been a "student" of sorts of Jimmy Johnson. I think he could be more versatile than f.e. Franklin and Rogers were, but basically filling the same role and being younger.

Damn link isn't working for me.

:computer2:

TheEnigma 03-19-2012 11:54 AM

He has bounced around to 3 different teams and didn't do anything with them. I just feel like this is another one of those 2nd or 3rd tier guys like Franklin and Rogers who won't do anything for the team. If I'm wrong I will be the first to admit it.

TheOak 03-19-2012 12:27 PM

Wiki verification team?

anyone can edit Wiki... I can change it back...

Ill put Manning at Atlanta... :-)

Archie that is.

TheOak 03-19-2012 12:28 PM

Click the "view history" tab... It shows all the changes and IP's for them

Sean Payton seems to have good success with retreads. We've been able to find a few good players along these same lines. He'll take a flier on these guys and hope for his gamblers luck to hold up. Sometimes it does and sometimes it just eats up your cap space.

Then we better hope he's not another Franklin or Rogers. I just feel like we could have used that money on Lofton or Hawthrone.

As far as I know, he has only played for the Eagles (who drafted him) and the Broncos - he was originally traded to the Browns, but he didn't show up or he failed the physical, depends on what source you believe.

If Spags wants him and believes he can make a contribution to the front 4, then I'm all far signing him, and given that he is younger makes me think there's more room for development than there ever was with either Franklin or Rogers.

Did you know that he lost his starting job with the Eagles? And why are the broncos just letting him go if he's good? I understand we all have different opinions, but I don't like this signing. Like I said I will admit I was wrong if he proves to be good.

hitta 03-19-2012 02:30 PM

According to Michael Lombardi of ESPN, he's supposed to sign with us pretty soon, if not already.

papz 03-19-2012 02:46 PM

Maybe the media will then call us free agency winners. Yippie!

/endsarcasm

Jordan, Bunkley, Ellis, Smith... not to shabby. Bunkley can absorb blocks while Ellis can do what he does best.

hitta 03-19-2012 02:48 PM

Ellis seriously needs to be restructured though, his contract is probably the most inflated contract per production on the roster.

Yes, I did know that. And after the Eagles signed Cullen Jenkins last off-season, Bunkley became expendable and that is why they traded him away. But again Jimmy Johnson liked him enough to draft him, and JJ did play him quite a lot before his untimely illness and death.

Going by just based on what I've read on some of the Broncos' message boards, Bunkley is one of the few FAs the fans would like to see come back for next season, so he must've been at least decent for them to want him back.

I don't know why the Broncos haven't made a stronger effort to re-sign him, but I don't know if they have on the other hand. He played at a low cap figure for them last season, something like ~$1.3M if I can remember correctly, so maybe they tried to low ball him with a similar cap hit type of an extension. Or maybe the whole Manning thing had put all of their FA negotiations on hold for the time being only to resume after they got some type of a clarification of how that was going enfold.

He is more mobile than either of Franklin and Rogers, and while he hasn't posted great stats when it comes to pass rush, he has far more pass rushing ability than either of the afore mentioned. And he is a natural 4-3 DT, which Franklin is not.

If the cap figures of a potential contract make sense and Spags likes what he brings to the table - I see no reason why they shouldn't sign him, I think they could do a lot worse.

LOL!!!

He's not bad, he just hasn't shined like everyone expected him to when we landed two big bodies to compliment him.

papz 03-19-2012 04:20 PM

He can get after the passer as he's proven in the past... he's just not good eating up blocks.

I certainly don't think he's a bad player, but I do think he is way overpaid. Something has to be done with his contract. I just don't see how they can rationalize keeping it as it is.

FinSaint 03-19-2012 04:34 PM

I agree that he isn't as bad as one might think after reading through a couple of threads here, but he hasn't ever risen to the 1st round pick level, so it's logical that there are some negative attitudes towards him.

He is being over-payed, but the restructuring would almost certainly mean an extension as well, so I'm kind of on the fence about that one before I can see what Spags is able to do with him.
