Sean Payton stunned by suspension: “I’m not OK”
Saints coach Sean Payton was shocked to find out today that he has been banished from the NFL for the entire 2012 season for his team’s bounty scandal.
Jay Glazer said on NFL Network that he interviewed Payton immediately after the news came down, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s punishment is far more severe than Payton was expecting. “I did talk to him and he’s stunned to say the least,” Glazer said. “I think the entire team thought maybe there’d be a four-game suspension, but not a year. I said, ‘Are you OK?’ And he said, ‘No, I’m not OK.’ He is stunned. He’s going to lose about $8 million. He is beside himself here.” Glazer reports that Payton’s plan for the four-game suspension he had braced himself for was to have assistant head coach/linebackers coach Joe Vitt take over as interim head coach while Payton served the suspension. But that plan is now out the window because Vitt has been suspended six games for his own role in the bounty scandal. The Saints may now have either offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael or former Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo, who was slated to replace Gregg Williams as defensive coordinator, step in as the head coach. I wouldn't be ok either if I was told I just lost $8 million dollars!
|
I smell LEGAL ACTION on the horizon.....
The NFL better allow for an appeal process. |
Spags, I guess, will be the Acting Head Coach.

I said, ‘Are you OK?’ And he said, ‘No, I’m not OK.’ He is stunned. He’s going to lose about $8 million.
You just got kick'in the balls. Did you do anything to stop it. What the heck did you think was going to happen. Don't play dumb. |
Vitt is suspened as well. Brees needs that 23mil now since he will be running the offense on his lonely.

What they did to Payton is just such a surprise and so over the top. He must be in shock.
I hope there is an appeals process or SOMETHING we can do. This is crazy and Goodell is really out of his mind. |
Doesn't Goodell get the final say on all appeals?
I can see a big red DENIED stamped on it before it ever gets started |

I agree, if you compare the two it seems very harsh that SP loses $8M and he is forced to not have any contact with the team for a year. I hope he has saved some of his earlier earnings. |
|
Also, didn't SP just buy a new house!!!!!!! Losing that $8 million is going to hurt even more I guess!!!!

As soon as we can come to the realization that we are basically dealing with elementary school intellect here, the better off we will be. It has been said that the reason Bellicheat got off so easy was because as soon as it was brought to the NFL's attention, they fessed up and STOPPED doing it Unlike the brain surgeons we apparently have.
We lied to them and told them nothing was going on. They warned us to stop in 2010 and we didn't. So Sean should think about that while he is on vacation for a year. He allowed us to have this Scarlet letter if for no other reason, allowing GW keep the program going. I am as shocked as anyone. The punishments that are dealt out by the elementary school principle have no rime or reason. It just depends on his mood I guess. |
I think we have seen the last of Payton. Just a gut feeling. It was fun while it lasted.

I agree, this isn't the first challenge he has been forced to face in his professional career - he'll overcome this one as well and come back even stronger. |
I agree, you are never to old to learn, and I'd bet you another bottle of Johnny Walker Blue, Sean's learning a little humility right about now. He will overcome it, it's in his DNA. Stay strong, hold the line!

Just think of all the new formations and plays he'll be able to draw up with his free time...

Sean Payton won't have to buy a single meal or drink in New Orleans for this whole year, if not ever again. Hell, if I were his landlord I would cut his rent in half as well. If I know the New Orleans community, they will take care of him until he is back on his feet.

Benson already has interims Carmichael/Spagnuolo in camp. He gets to keep Payton's $8 mil, share an extra $2 mil with the interims, and then let Payton pick up where he left off. There is a certain loyalty that's woefully missing in today's NFL. Sticking with who brung ya would go a long way to rectify that for this organization. Things would take a drastic turn if Benson takes the out route with Sean Payton. |
Goodell gets the final word on all appeals, and it is in their contract that they can not seek judicial recourse.
I am hoping, like in the case of Rapestberger... The big punishment was meant to stifle the crowds.. and near week 8 Payton and Loomis's suspensions are lifted.... When things quiet down a bit. |

I really hope that is how it all works out in the end. Imagine if SP will be forced to sit out the whole season, and then when Goodell examines GW's suspension a year from now - like it was stated that he would - Goodell would decide to let GW back into the league once again. That would suck big time! SP and GW basically serving the same sentence for totally different roles in this whole mess. I know it's very unlikely that would happen, but who knows what will happen when Goodell is involved. |
Looks like from the reading, he was in the wrong. Just has to take his medicine and come back stronger.
|
You think Sean was intense now, just wait till he comes back after being gone a year, IMO Benson will take Sean back with open arms and it will be business as usual come 2013
|
My man has a whole year to sit and think.
