Rooney Rule has limited appilication to Saints
Several of you have asked whether the Saints will be required to comply with the Rooney Rule in replacing coach Sean Payton for the 2012 season.
The answer is: Maybe. Per a source with knowledge of the procedures, the Saints won’t be required to comply with the Rooney Rule if they stay within the organization to find a replacement for Payton. If, alternatively, the Saints make an outside hire for 2012, the Saints will be required to interview in person at least one minority candidate. For now, it appears that the Saints will stay in-house, elevating offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr., offensive line coach Aaron Kromer, or defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo (pictured). Payton’s one-season suspension becomes effective April 1. Rooney Rule has limited application to Saints |
Tuna is Italian...
that is a minority. |
Does the Rooney rule apply to hiring an INTERIM head coach?
|
I don't think interim has anything to do with it

If the Saints want to hire someone outside the organization, Parcells, Cowher, gruden, etc. they HAVE to interview a minority coach. |

it's not a real rule anyway...
so we interview Dennis Green just like everyone else and hire who we want |

But like Florio points out, why would they bother to come in for an interview when they know Parcells already has the job? |
I say we hire The Big Tuna and turn him loose on Goodell.

IIRC he was a horrible interview but eventually convinced someone to hire him after several of these interviews. I have no problem with the rule as long as the minority in question knows the situation and realizes why he's there and what he gains from it is the real reason the rule exists to start with. Disclaimer: I may be confusing Marvin Lewis and Lovie Smith, my memory sucks at my age, but the point remains. |
