I wonder if SP knows what he can/cannot do!!

Adam Schefter (the real one) of ESPN.com reported yesterday that Sean Payton's suspension calls for him to have no contact with anyone in the Saints organization as well as the NFL while it is in effect.

Shipgoalie05 gets credit for bringing us the story first on Tuesday, in this fanshot. Thankyouverymuch. (read that in your Elvis Presley voice, please)

This is a bit of a shift from the reports about permissible behavior following Payton's appeal, at least from Chris Mortensen on April 10:

A league official tells ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that means, for example, that Payton is "not allowed to engage in any coaching activities. Roger [Goodell] commented on that at the league meeting press conference, saying he's not naïve enough to think there won't be some contact but [Payton's] not allowed to coach from home ... If a player has a baby, can he call to congratulate him? I don't think we're going to worry about that, or have a wiretap on his phone."

Schefter is an ESPN NFL Insider, for Pete's sake, and Mort is ESPN's Senior NFL Analyst - who in the heck are we to believe here?

Come across the jump for more...

Here's the opening of Schefter's story from yesterday...

Under the terms of his season-long suspension for his role in New Orleans' bounty program, coach Sean Payton is not allowed to have any contact with the Saints organization or anyone around the NFL, and if he does, must report it to league executive Ray Anderson, a source familiar with the suspension tells ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Wait, you also want him to self report? Remember, this is the guy who lied to you about things. Repeatedly. Are you sure you want to trust him with that responsibility?

Thus, when Payton's suspension began Monday, he essentially was cut off from every Saints employee and any coaching friend he has around the league until the day after the 2013 Super Bowl, when the suspension is scheduled to end.

Yeah, but what about just talking to his neighbors?

Payton and Saints general manager Mickey Loomis have beach houses about one mile apart from each other in Florida. They cannot, by the NFL's law, say hello to each other on the beach without Anderson being informed of it.

Aw, cripes! Seriously? How dramatic! It looks like he really has ridden off into the NFL sunset, at least until next year. Guess you'll have to make some new friends, Sean. Good luck with that.

I'm not sure how to reconcile these two differing ideas on the suspension. Schefter's is more recent, but Mort is a SENIOR ANALYST and has been doing this for a much longer time than Schefter...HELP!

Neither.
