Does Shanle stay or go?

Not much has been said from what I've been reading on here about Shanle since we brought in 3 new lb.'s I for one thinks "ole reliable " makes the team. Spags. wanted him in St. Louis and I think he would want him here, he plays well enough to at least be a more than capable back-up if nothing else, he is never hurt plays every game, no one has beat him out so far and in Spags system he should improve. Ecellent in tackling and plays the run well. Opionions please!!!

It's impossible to cut somebody that has blackmail on you.......lol:smile:

I noticed how almost nobody had him in their lists in that other linebacker thread, well I am not a huge fan but I for one, am not so sure that he is gone as a starter. Like you said, somebody's gonna have to beat him out for it. And he's CHEAP, which means, more $$$ for Brees. We have to accept that reality, like it or not.

I am mainly just excited that he is going to have some competition in camp. A couple of guys from that group are going to emerge as real winners, and that's exactly what this defense needs -- the attitude that nobody's job is safe, week in and week out, you gotta perform and make plays, or you're a gone pecan.

It was getting stale, the last year or so under GW, where he pretty much had his people and his scheme and his mind was kinda made up about them. I am looking for a lot of HUSTLE and a lot of guys BUSTING RUMP on defense this year, to make an impression on Spags.

I have a hard time trying to believe that he can hold on to a starting spot, not with the LB's we brought in.

But he is cheap and will provide decent depth, I think he stays just not a starter

ChrisXVI 04-23-2012 06:17 PM

He stays, but he won't be starting. Not with the players we've brought in and the younger guys on the roster who haven't had much chance yet to compete for the job.

Backup.

FinSaint 04-27-2012 06:08 AM

I don't know, to me a $2.95M cap hit for a backup OLB isn't really that cheap, even more so because he isn't the highest caliber of a backup.

And I don't know if he is "excellent in tackling," maybe relatively if compared to the rest of the LB corps during the past two seasons, but he has his problems like taking bad angles and not always wrapping up but instead relying on the actual impact of the tackle, which is all too common in today's NFL. I dare say that his tackling ability will be surpassed by guys like Lofton and Hawthorne, who are real tackling machines.

I think that they may end up cutting him at some point, simply because they are so heavy on the LB front and because that cap hit might be needed elsewhere - maybe one of the last cuts before the final roster.

Shanle is good at a few things..
Not shedding blocks
Not getting in position cause he is too slow
Letting people run free in coverage...

Those are just a few things he does well. Face it with the exception of vilma our lbs have sucked since fujita left. Now we have a lot of young talent on the team so its time for shanle to take a seat.

Could very well be, after all they did show interest in Shanle at St. Louis during last offseason FA period, and therefore, it would make sense to deduce from that that Spags likes him as a player.

I guess what matters more is when he made that statement? If he made it before any personnel transactions were made - then it makes sense to say that he would start, like he did all last season.

But with all the new additions to the LB corps, it would be hard to argue for him having the first pick at the starting job at his position, although I guess he can win it during camp if he is still around.

I just think that he becomes a cap casualty at the end of the day, while he doesn't make huge dollars, a $2.95M cap hit is still significant together with the fact that he only has one more year left in his contract.

He said as of now (the 1st day of OTA's without pads) that Shanle was the SLB on the depth chart.

He also said that if Vilma was healthy, Shanle was NOT a starter.

I don't mind Shanle if he is playing on the strong side. Although I wonder why keep him when you have Will Herring who is pretty much the same exact player with a little more speed.

...and with a $1.2M smaller cap hit than Shanle has.

Herring supposedly has good coverage skills, but unfortunately he missed most of last season due to the injury, so it's hard to assess whether that notion holds true - he did have that one pick if I remember correctly.

Also, Herring will be under contract for the 2013 season with a $1.8M cap hit, so it would make sense to keep him if it came down to either him or Shanle, who would become a FA next offseason - or maybe a trade if someone was interested?

who would be interested in a trade for Shanle?! lol
