Possible replacement for Meachem?

The Washington Redskins have cut veteran wide receiver Jabar Gaffney after unsuccessful attempts to trade him.

Gaffney, 31, caught 68 passes for 947 yards and five touchdowns last season.

Gaffney is a 6-foot-2, 200-pound former University of Florida standout who has also played for the Denver Broncos, New England Patriots and the Houston Texans.

For his career, he has caught 443 passes for 5,622 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Tooooooooon!!!

SapperSaint 05-01-2012 02:56 PM

I'm with Seer on this.

We drafted a guy for this spot.

Danno 05-01-2012 02:59 PM

Toon and Joe Morgan should be able to fill that spot, hopefully.

I was never impressed with Gaffney.

Morgan is going to be hobbled going into camp I would imagine. It takes a while to get your speed back after knee surgery. I do want to see him excel this year.

I wasn't the biggest Meachem fan, but when you look at his numbers it's clear he made some big plays... When healthy.
I wasn't worried he left, but I still think the offense lost their only over the top threat.
Meachem ran the Go in most of the read based pass plays.
Can Morgan replace that spot? It's not about catches... it's about threat.
When we are in trips and run something like "verticals"... the reason Colston and Graham get open over the middle is the safeties are split...
Covering the outside deep threats...
Who do we have on the roster that can test deep safety?

It was only a two week meniscus injury, but they decided to IR him anyway. Think of it as a redshirt year.

I can't imagine him not being 100%.

I always liked Meachem... guy stretched the field for us. Toon is a GREAT route runner though so hopefully he will be a nice fit for the option routes we have for our WRs. I'm worried about who is going to fill the "deep threat" role... Devery? Dude can still fly but we haven't seen much of him in the last two years (probably because of Meachem).

Gaffney is allright but a 10 year veteran, I rather go for a younger guy here.

Wow! He's been in the league 10 years? Damn I'm getting old.

How about In-Toon?

QBREES9 05-02-2012 12:09 AM

We drafted him, Mr Toon.

dizzle88 05-02-2012 05:37 AM

Colston, Henderson and moore will take this guy under there wing and teach him everything they have learnt playing WR, I have a feeling Toon will be making an big impact sooner rather than later

hagan714 05-02-2012 07:47 AM

Gaffney is a 4th, at best or a fifth WR. I have seen him play for years in NE. he is another mechem, tease all the way. not sure if it is playbook issues or just a ball player that is good enough to hang around and make a living at football. one year deal would work but i am not looking for a break out season at 31

pherein 05-02-2012 10:15 AM

Im thinking Adrian Arrington. He's ready to take on a bigger role, and has played solid. 11.3 yards average in 2010, and 15.5 in 2011. He knows the system, and I would play him as a coach in Meachems spot just to know where he stands in the ball club.
Playing Toon like they have been using Arrington in the past makes sense, as Colstons 2nd.
If Arrington can't hack it, and Toon starts to shine, well then it obvious what to do.

|Mitch| 05-02-2012 10:29 AM

I think Arrington is a free agent, and we haven't offered him a new deal?

pherein 05-02-2012 10:35 AM

Yeah he was signed. I had to look it up because I could not remember either.

If that makes you feel old, check out the birth dates of the guys we drafted.

^ This. It was the time of year when promising young players get put on IR for having a hangnail or for accidentally stubbing their toe in the dark in the film room, so they can be squirreled away for next year. Old NFL trick.
