Why the New Orleans Saints should sign Dallas Clark

New Orleans Saints: Why the Saints Should Sign Dallas Clark | Bleacher Report

I literally sat up in my chair and my drink came up...... Is this dude still out there!!!!

|Mitch| 05-16-2012 11:36 PM

Clark is still a free agent, I believe. I wonder why?

RockyMountainSaint 05-17-2012 12:34 AM

Oh, Mickey............

Make it happen!

pherein 05-17-2012 01:49 AM

no

FinSaint 05-17-2012 02:11 AM

IDK, they already have an injury-prone veteran TE in Thomas, so I'd rather see them save a few bucks and fill the 3rd TE spot with a young player who might develop into a weapon.

TheOak 05-17-2012 06:23 AM

We still do not know what Brees salary cap hit will be, I do not suspect that Clark will come cheaply.

Danno 05-17-2012 08:06 AM

Age, combined with the injuries should make him affordable (if Drew signs a long term contract).

Put me down in the "I'm interested" group.

Obviously the price would have to be right.

hagan714 05-17-2012 09:12 AM

injury. the dude has not played a full year in what ? 2 or 3 years now. pass

But neither has David Thomas, Lance Moore, Pierre Thomas, Chris Ivory, Mark Ingram or Marques Colston.

jcp026 05-17-2012 09:34 AM

I'd be okay with it. I do like the group we have. Including Josh Chichester and Michael Higgins.

Clark played in a total of 17 games the last two seasons with 71 receptions. Each season, he was placed on injured reserve; in 2010 he had a season-ending wrist injury and a pinched nerve and broken fibula cost him time last season. Clark turns 33 next month.

Dallas Clark, , NFL Football - CBSSports.com News, Rumors, Scores, Stats, Fantasy

so why add another player that is a high risk to end up on IR ?

i say wait to see what happens during camp.

or look at a lunch pail FA like

Zach Potter, TE, Jaguars. Age: 26
Height: 6'7"
Weight: 279

maybe not the most nimble of TE but he can help out on both sides of the ball if needed. DE in college. 5 blocked kicks in college. a few int's also

i still say wait and see what happens first

Speedy Ron 05-17-2012 11:42 AM

hes still a free agent cause he is so awesome lately. THERE IS A REASON NO ONE WANTS HIM!!!!! why do people like cast offs so much?????

QBREES9 05-17-2012 11:44 AM

No we have Dave Thomas.

What got them here.

Will not get us there.

Rugby Saint II 05-17-2012 01:07 PM

We would have to let Thomas go and keep Higgins as our developmental player. Do we want to trade a player we could lose at any moment to another concussion or do we bring in another player who is getting older and has not been healthy lately? Thomas already knows the system and is a good locker room guy.

SapperSaint 05-17-2012 02:19 PM

I'm gonna have to pass on this one.

Drew could make me a star TE.

Tight ends are usually tall fellows. How tall are you with the ears? ;)

Saints4lyfe 05-20-2012 12:43 PM

Heard Thomas was healthy and ready to go. He's very underrated.

TE's are the new weapon de jour. Clark is great insurance if the price is fair.

Brandon428 05-20-2012 03:27 PM

Holy crap! GO GET HIM! 2 great TEs would really open the deep routes!

QBREES9 05-21-2012 12:41 PM

Clark going to Tampa. They cut ties with Winslow.

FinSaint 05-21-2012 12:58 PM

If Winslow's knees were in a better shape - now I don't know if they are or aren't because he didn't partake in the Bucks' OTAs - he might be an intriguing guy to target.

If he'd be willing to sign for less than what he would've made with the Bucs - $3.3M/2012 & $4.5M/2013 - he might be a really nice target to add to the Saints' offense.

hagan714 05-21-2012 08:45 PM

Winslow's traded in the division? i think not. in the conference? no way.

i would give him a look at.

has played in all 16 games since 2009. 70 catches a year and 700 yards on average.

The question now is whether Clark, who will turn 33 next month, has anything left on the field: He has struggled through injuries the last two seasons and is coming off a year in which he caught just 34 passes for 352 yards.

Of course, Manning wasn't the QB.......

hagan714 05-21-2012 08:58 PM

now for the funny part of this

on April 6, 2009 he became at the time the richest TE in the NFL.
six-year, $36.1 million
includes $20.1 million in guarantees.
With incentives, the deal could grow to $42.1 million

BUT.........

Winslow is due $3.3 million, $4.5 million, and $5.5 million, with no guarantees,

i would probably wait to see if they cut him first.

jcp026 05-21-2012 09:24 PM

I would like to have signed Clark to keep him away from TB. I think he'll really help them. I'd definitely like to add Winslow if the price is right. I'm always for adding big, physical targets for the soon to be signed (fingers crossed) Drew Brees.

I doubt that the Bucs will be able to make a trade for him since teams are not going to want to take on the existing contract Winslow has and they also know that the Bucs are most likely going to cut him if they can't find a trading partner.

Winslow has had a consistent history of knee surgeries, so teams are not looking at him as a high offseason target due to the uncertainty of whether he'll be able to produce at a high level and if he has many years left in his career.

This is the basis on which I was making the comment that Winslow might be an interesting target for the Saints, because if he is cut, he might just want to sign with the Saints to get back at his former team. Furthermore, he might be willing to sign for an affordable price if he sees that the benefit of playing with someone like Brees will ultimately be the best opportunity for him to have as much success as possible during the rest of his career, which some speculate might be entering its final years even though he's only 28.

He is no doubt a warrior, because he has been able to play even with all the complications he has had with his knees, but the injuries/surgeries have taken their toll and he has lost some speed and mobility, which I guess is why the Bucs ultimately decided that he would be expendable. But still, he could make a hell of a TE pair with Graham being 6-4 and 240 lbs.

How can we even talk about signing anyone else, when we are in such a salary cap bind with Drew at the moment?

Are we?!

I have no idea what the current salary calculations are for the projected 53 man roster, and if the lack of cap room is really the main reason why they haven't been able to reach an agreement with Brees.

I for one am pretty sick of talking about Brees and I find it rather refreshing to talk about other potential signings whether or not it's actually possible for the Saints to sign anybody else at the moment.

If someone like Winslow would be available for around $2.5M-$3.5M/year for 2 to 3 years, it would certainly be something I'd think the FO would have to give some serious consideration to regardless of the situation with Brees.

QBREES9 05-21-2012 11:00 PM

Winslow signed with the Seahags.

Luda34 05-22-2012 01:11 AM

Winslow traded to Seattle after Tampa signs Dallas Clark

FinSaint 05-22-2012 03:25 AM

Well, there goes that... :-)

The 'Hawks only gave up a "conditional" pick for Winslow, which does reiterate the fact that teams were not willing to pay a high price for him with all of the uncertainties surrounding his health.

hagan714 05-22-2012 04:49 AM

like i said no way he ends up in the nfc south or even the nfc if they could help it. freaking 7th rounder grrrr
