When Should The Saints Start Grooming Drew Brees's Successor?

Brees is 33 now, and if he quarterbacks the Saints for an injury-free six or seven more years, it would be a remarkable achievement. Staying positive that a long-term deal will get done, there is still likely a kid quarterbacking a high school or college team right now who will have some mighty big Black and Gold shoes to fill in 2020, if not sooner.

I can only recall two instances since I started watching professional football, when a Hall of Fame quarterback has been followed by another HOF quarterback (or at least a strong candidate). These two examples are referenced often by analysts with Steve Young succeeding Joe Montana in San Francisco, and more recently with the Packers and Aaron Rodgers stepping into Brett Favre's shoes, after the latter couldn't decide if he really wanted to give them up.

No offense, but Rodgers has to put up big numbers for several more years before he's even considered a Hall of Famer.

When Brees signs his last long term contract, you start Grooming his replacement.

I want to see the length of the upcoming Brees contract before I start thinking about his replacement...

IF he signs i would say in about 3 more years or whenever the next draft class that is deep in quality QB's. If Brees plays 6 more seasons it would give his successor 3 solid years to sit behind him and learn to take over.

How many years has Daniels been behind Brees? 3 more years, he'd better be, or he could be the next Bobby Scott.

IF Brees signs Chase will likely be too old to be his successor once Brees hangs up his cleats. He MAY be an interim QB for a couple of years until we find someone via the draft and rebuild, but he is not the future at QB

Is Colt McCoy signed yet? His numbers and accuracy is college make him look like Brees 2.0. Wouldn't mind him under Brees for 4 years.

We are right now. His name is Chase Daniel

Love Chase. He will do great. Just think McCoy would be perfect as a second, or successor, and it seems like no one wants him, lol.

Funny if you watch the videos Brees looks exactly like he does on the Saints. God, I love Brees.
