Saints lose Chase Daniel to broken thumb
 

It’s a good thing the Saints are almost finished with their on-field work until training camp, because they’re quickly running out of quarterbacks.

Saints coach Joe Vitt said Wednesday that backup Chase Daniel will be out until training camp, after suffering a sprained thumb and a hairline fracture, per Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Vitt said Daniel suffered the injury when he hit his thumb on a helmet.

The Saints have already had their minicamp, and have just one more scheduled day of OTAs, so there shouldn’t be a panic.

Still, the only healthy passers on the roster are the recently signed Luke McCown and Sean Canfield.

If nothing else, that should serve as a subliminal message to get going on signing a quarterback.

I remember hearing they were close on one last week. Wonder what happened to that Drew Brees guy?

Glad this didn't happen earlier in the OTA's. Still not a big deal since we will have Drew back soon.

Nobody needs to be available. The Saints' mini camp is over. They don't meet again until July 27th. Brees will be signed by then and Daniel will be 100% by then.

METAIRIE — Even though he missed the final practice of the offseason Wednesday because of a hairline fracture to the thumb of his throwing hand, New Orleans Saints backup quarterback Chase Daniel should be ready for the start of training camp next month.

Saints acting coach Joe Vitt said Daniel, a four-year veteran, was injured in Monday’s organized team activity when his thumb accidentally struck a teammate’s helmet on his follow-through during a two-minute drill.

Daniel won’t be able to throw for 21/2 weeks, but that isn’t a problem because the Saints’ offseason program comes to a close Thursday with the last of their 10 allotted OTAs — a golf outing for players and coaches.

Vitt said Daniel, who ran the first-team offense in the absence of starter Drew Brees during their OTAs and last week’s full-squad minicamp, won’t have to undergo surgery and should be fully recovered when players report back for training camp on July 26.
