Help me understand this

So if Brees does not sign by the 16th then he cannot sign a long term contract and can only sign the franchise tag? If this is the case what would be the point of him sitting out? I could see him sitting out unless he got the contract he wanted but if the rules say he cannot sign a contract after the July 16th deadline what leverage would holding out have?

Are you looking at it hypothetically? He's stated he will not be sitting out.

They'll get a long-term deal done just before that deadline and everyone will be happy - except maybe some of the soon to be FAs.

Both are off the table after the 16th. Long term contract and Franchise Tag.

Leaving a one year contract of any number as the only available option...
