Report: Drew Brees may skip Saints training camp
The game of chicken between Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints continues to take on increasingly serious overtones.
With less than a week left for the record-setting quarterback and his team to replace his one-year franchise tag with a muti-year contract, Brees is pondering a training camp holdout, per ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Report: Drew Brees may skip Saints training camp Drew Brees won't sign franchise tender, won't show up for training camp if long-term deal isn't reached with New Orleans Saints: ESPN report ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported, via sources, that New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees won't sign the franchise tag tender and has no plans to show up for training camp if a long-term contract isn't reached by the July 16 deadline. According to ESPN, Brees is still seeking a five-year deal worth $20.5 million per year, while the Saints' last offer was for $19.25 million per year. This threat shouldn't come as much of a surprise. It has always loomed over these contract negotiations as the doomsday scenario. And it is Brees' best leverage as he tries to get the Saints to increase their contract offer. As of 3 p.m. central time on Monday, Brees and the Saints can no longer sign a long-term deal until after the season. They can only sign a one-year deal. Drew Brees won't sign franchise tender, won't show up for training camp if long-term deal isn't reached with New Orleans Saints: ESPN report - New Orleans Saints Football NFL News - NOLA.com |
Great. We have 2 months more of this ****.
|
Really drew? 19.25 mil is not enough for you?
I won't even earn a 16th of that figure in my lifetime, if it isn't enough and he sits so be it |
This is coming from ESPN, enough said right there
Drew himself has said he won't hold-out, and at this point in time I'll believe Drew over anything from ESPN... |
He hasn't missed anything important yet.
|
It may be from ESPN but after a year of the Saints wanting to work out a new contract with him and Drew having Tom Condon as an agent... I'm kinda willing to believe it. If an entire year wasn't enough time to get a deal done I'm not real optimistic that 6 days is.
|
LOL
And I actually pulled for this greedy MF'r to break all records at the close of last season. Knowing what I know now I wish he would have been pulled just shy and not played again until the playoffs. I just don't see how this equates to TEAM UNITY that he preaches. Alaska |
There is no reason for a deal to be signed until the 16th at 3:00. Other than players being arrested there isn't any football news. They have to talk about something. Who are these sources that say what's been offered? Is it the same sources from the bounty stories? If a deal isn't reached by Monday then we can blast whomever we feel is at fault. Until then let's just drink another one and wait it out.

Thanks, John! Alaska |
If he signs the tag I say we just bench him to teach him a lesson.

All of you guys need to check yourself. Seriously.
Did anyone here help rescue an ailing NFL franchise? Did you help bring an entire city back from the brink of destruction? Did you put a team on your shoulders in the midst of a league lockout when no one else could? And does anyone here (combined for that matter) make as much money for their boss or company or local community than Drew Brees does? Then stop the whining. Why is it easy for you to justify him being paid "a few million dollars less" but if the tables were turned, would take our boss to task over $1,000 per year... Drew Brees is the biggest thing in New Orleans next to the Mighty Mississippi. And in the NFL, you're paid for what you did more often than what you will do. Pay him. |

almost... |
Anyone want to trade away an Ivory jersey for a Brees jersey? Size 52.
I'm done cheering on Drew Brees, although I hope he makes us proud this year. Alaska |
Sign the damn thing.

Thank you Roger Goodell and you bastards at the NFLPA. Can you tell I'm pretty much fed up with this bull****? I know, It'll be better in a few weeks, but damn...its hard right now. |
Drew himself has said he won't hold-out, and at this point in time I'll believe Drew over anything from ESPN.
Until I hear it from Drew. I don't believe a thing the MEDIA is putting out. |

Don't forget this is a business. And that's how Loomis has always viewed it. And Condon is known for being the thorn in the side of any GM in contract talks with him. And don't think for one second DB has forgotten what it feels like to get thrown out on his butt after being injured while playing on a one year franchise tag. "Screw me twice, shame on me". I'm tired of peoples opinions being swayed by the latest Drew vs. the Team blog. We don't know what's really going on, it's mostly speculation based on loose rumor (ala Goodell's "case"). |
Even before reading Sgt. Hulkas comments I was thinking to myself that if Drew doesn't sign by the deadline I'm not wearing a #9 jersey.....ever!
I love the player.......but, I'm starting to question my loyalty to the man. |

He said he wants a team friendly deal....again.... A TEAM FRIENDLY DEAL But we lost Carl nicks and meachem when he proved that wasn't the case At this point, I really want him to sign but if he doesn't I'm fully prepared for us to suck for the next couple of seasons, if he asks for a trade so be it He deserves the money but he isn't showing any remorse knowing that the more he asks for the further he hurts the team, not being at camp is hurting the team anyway |
He's nothing without SEAN PAYTON, and knows it.
Maybe that's the source of his apprehension. Alaska |
Hopefully this report is just a move on the chess board. The level of frustration is palpable in us all, we just need to try to chill until July 16 and at that point see where this is.

If Payton were here this would be a moot point. If all else fails next year we take the best available backup with potential and let Payton coach him up. Drew would be missed but so would 1/5 of our cap.

I think Sean Payton could take a top 15 QB and make him a top 5 QB. The combination of Brees/Payton results in top 3. |
I agree with Mardigras9 and everyone else on this page. Thing is, no training camp....this da mn thing is frustrating.
How can DB be ready for QWB without training camp. Nevermind, yeah, he is that good, but training camp. Training. Getting trained. Teaching the team how to read him, he reads them, plays, etc. |
"The Saints have already offered Brees the richest contract in league history, surpassing the $19.2 million per year that the Denver Broncos gave quarterback Peyton Manning ... "
It would be stunning upset if Drew Brees' deal with New Orleans Saints isn't done by July 16 - New Orleans Saints Football NFL News - NOLA.com I love Drew Brees, and I want him in New Orleans. That said, we're TRYING to pay the man ... |
I am beginning to get a feeling that after this is through, we are going to see a New England-like attitude in the Saints franchise after this deal is done. You know the rumor where New England and Bellichick have been said to be in a sort of "cold war" with Tom Condon, won't talk to him and reputedly won't make deals with any Condon clients for their team, basically "if Condon is the guy's agent, then we're not interested in that player, we'll pass and sign somebody else." I could EASILY see the Saints adopting the same type of philosophy, after all this is over with and Drew is signed. So we're in the home stretch here, folks.
|
From reports: latest update is that the $ amount is settled, and the isue is guaranteed money.
As I have said before... The apprehension of the front office is because they are in waters above their head, they do not have the stomach for this, never have they has to put ink on paper with a talent like Drew... its not that they can not afford it, they can... its that they are scared they will guarantee and lose on that..... If you want the big frikken reward... You HAVE to take the big frikken risk! |
I want the truth. And yes i can handle the truth. Hasn't Drew said in the past they wern't that far a part. I can't belive this deal isn't done. Well what the hold up ( get it ) who's holding this deal up.
|
Pure posturing, when this is all said and done, i hope he chokes on his millions. And I hope Condon chokes on a chicken bone.
