The New Orleans Saints are into their second week of mini camp and it shows.

Tuesday's workout was no way near as crisp as it should have been but you can probably figure fatigue has set in a bit. They worked hard last week for the first time since January. Then had four days off. Then practiced on the grass and in the heat.

It seems as though they have settled into the routine and the new players are learning how this team practices.

The QB's continue to throw downfield quite a bit and the overall talent at wide receiver is by far the best this team has ever had at one time.

The most interesting tid bit to come out of the second week of practice is defensive line coach John Pease. Pease is getting his players tuned in to what he expects. They all knew Pease would come in and work them at a much higher pace then they were used to. But what they did not know is Pease is spending a tremendous amount of time on fundamentals. Most notable TACKLING.

Not a bad idea considering that's what those guys do. But what is most surprising to the team is Pease telling them they must get quicker. And NOT to shed offensive lineman's blocks.

Pease wants these guys to be fast enough to chase down QB's and running backs. I have a feeling the defensive lineman have only just begun to grasp what kind of coach John Pease is.

By the way Jonathan Sullivan is still being completely broken down as a player by Pease but on Tuesday, Sullivan actually wanted some more reps at practice.

Love this guy so far. A coach with some intensity, who\'s not going to take anything but full effort from his players. If every one of our coaches commanded this way, we\'d be a serious threat. I think Haz is going to be fired up again this year, he knows his job is on the line, and hopefully it will show.

Could it be the the 21 year old man-child is maturing?
I think we all forget this kid should be a rookie this year. He\'s young, and Pease is letting him know that you\'d better stay in shape year round or you\'re gonna be in some major pain during training camp.
A good sign, to me.

I thought you would like that Danno. Man, I tell you what. I am soooo glad that John Pease is here. Charles Grant said Pease is going to be more involved in the defensive game plan than the other D-line coach. Grant said Pease has already broken down the game film of their first 4 opponents. He also said that Pease has a totally differnet way he wants the D-line to play. Pease told them not to worry about trying to beat the offensive linemen. He said he wants them to run to the ball and not worry about the offensive linemen.

I expect this to be the defense we\'ve been wating on. The optimist will rule this year :P

I don\'t want to sound like a sunshiner, but I think this guy is our best offseason move we\'ve made in 4 years.
Not only will he help the rookies and Sullivan (his forte is developing youngsters) but he will make Howard, Grant, Kenny Smith and even Willie Whitehead better.
He has a proven track record so his addition doesn\'t fall into that \"potential to help\" category.
Since most of the games I see are on TV the majority of my football knowledge is geared toward the lines (and following the camera).
I\'m so fired up about BOTH the O & D lines this year I just can\'t wait.
I also think Venturi has the ego, or lack thereof, to feed off of Pease\'s suggestions.Venturi is a football guru, but I don\'t think he can motivate the troops to get into KILL mode, But I think Pease can and will.

I don\'t think that\'s being a \'sunshiner\', I think it\'s \'probable\' to think Pease is going to have an immediate impact on the D-line.

Yep. Know who the number one defense was against the run last year? Jacksonville!! John Pease is undoubtably one of the best coaches in the league today. He\'s also walking into to a situation where he has unlimited talent and potential in a defensive line. Sounds like a match made in heaven to me.

That\'s where it all starts. I said last year I thought it was time for Fotenot to be replaced. I think his play was sub-standard last year and now we\'ve got our best guys on the offensive line in Bentley and Montre Holland. Victor Riley is no scrub himself. Overall, our O-line is very solid, IMO.

That\'s what I\'m hoping. I feel comfortable that we\'re going to find out this year if it\'s a coaching problem or a lack of talent problem.

I could go on and on, but I\'m feeling very optimistic about our defense this year.

John Pease was out of football last year. I will admit that he had a large part in the development of that line but if you want to wax intellectual about it, he wasnt there last year. Also, he has got his work cut out for him to remove that \"potential\" tag from the Saints line and make them dominant if not merely competent. Could be worse though, I could have a hairy back.

You\'re right, Pease wasn\'t the D-line coach in Jacksonville last year. My bad. He does have a good history with \'coaching up\' D-lines though. Including our very own dome patrol defense.

Why do you feel that it is time for Fontenot to be replaced?

Riley is no scrub, that is true, but he has always been an underachiever, and I can\'t tell whether it\'s his strength or technique. Any help on this would be appreciated.

As I said last year. I saw a lot of pressure coming staight up the middle. Maybe it wasn\'t Fontenot\'s fault. But he didn\'t seem to be able to get a push on the defensive line. The guy wasn\'t the same player as he was in his younger days. As far as Fontenot goes, the guy was average at best. His strengths were getting everyone lined-up and his technique I suppose.

I think we\'re going to have a better offensive line this year with Bentley at center and Holland at guard. I THINK we are going to get a much better push in the middle of our O-line. Of couse, I could be wrong.

True, Riley has been known as an underachiever, but last year he supposedly re-commited himself and I think it showed.
