New Orleans Saints rookie DT Akiem Hicks may miss start of training camp
1 Attachment(s)
New Orleans Saints interim coach Joe Vitt said third-round draft pick defensive tackle Akiem Hicks may miss the first couple of days of training camp after sustaining a fractured hand in June during organized team activities. Vitt said Hicks could end up starting Thursday's camp on the physically unable to perform list with the ailment.
Running back Mark Ingram said at the end of the offseason workout program in June that his scoped left knee would be completely healed when training camp begins. But Vitt said Tuesday that the training staff would monitor Ingram leading to the possibility of Ingram being limited when camp opens Thursday. There was no update on running back Chris Ivory, who missed the last week of OTAs with an injured hamstring. Vitt said during the last week of OTAs in June that he hoped Ivory would be ready for the start of training camp. Better now than once the season starts!

Wish Ivory could stay healthy

and so it begins

What is everyone expecting from Hicks?
Short term and in the future. |

The second coming of Glover. :bng: And it was already known that Hicks would miss the start of the training camp, because that much was revealed when he initially sustained the injury. |
It's just his hand, not worried at all. Better this than his knee, or something that would end his career before it even starts
|
Can live with a hand injury, no knees please.

It's just a broken bone in his hand. They heal.

I do honestly think that Hicks could be a great DT for the Saints going forward, something that we all expected Ellis to be when he got picked, but one that he has never really manifested into... yet.
Hicks has all the tangibles, but he needs a lot of coaching and practice time on the field. Spags is probably one of the best DCs at coaching up D-linemen, so in that regard Hicks couldn't be in a much better place than he is at the moment. I guess ultimately a lot is determined by how quickly he can get accustomed to the NFL level, having played at the Canadian collegiate level, and if he'll have Spags coaching him for more than a single season - because if and when the Saints win the SB some teams are going to invite him over to interview for a HC position. The ever changing DCs have probably been one of the key reasons why Ellis' development hasn't really gone as planned, and the possibility of that is something that shouldn't be disregarded in Hicks case either. |
With Hicks being out it might give someone undrafted a look at what they can do, Hicks will heal but I would sure like a gem to step in at that position the most of all.

Mark Ingram (knee, toe) and Chris Ivory (hamstring) were "pretty much full blast" as the Saints opened training camp Thursday.
