Run Defense vs. Arizona

Didn't like our run defense at all against the Cardinals.
Don't want to hear, "they'll get it fixed." Again and again.
It's the personnel not the scheme.

The worst part is you'll hear all week how Alphonso Smith is a sleeper this year, based on his performance against the Saints.
Then in 5 days he rush for 5 on 7 carries against the Chiefs and we'll know how bad our front 7 is.

Ashley 08-05-2012 10:06 PM

I'm not even going to say anything bad our team yet. I do feel your pain man, it does seem year in and year out. So I do see where you are going, but I'm not jumping on that ship yet.

Easy my pals .lets give themsome playtime .before hangin

blackangold 08-05-2012 10:17 PM

Yeah, I am not going to judge how our team will play until the 3rd preseason game (4th for us).
I saw good things from a lot of the D players we all have been talking about (JR, Wilson, Lofton). Also #75 Walker had a great game in the 2nd half, he may be a sleeper DT.

I don't know if I just key in on Shanle but I always see him getting blocked out or misreading the play completely. Just in this pre-season game I saw 4 plays which he was out of position or blocked out of the play.

papz 08-05-2012 10:17 PM

It's the first frickin' preseason game...

oh, please don't get me mixed up in the hangin group. I am nowhere near that. Just wanted to state i could see where he was coming from.

saintfan 08-05-2012 10:23 PM

1 week of practice and installing a new defense and we're already hearing this? Amazing.

SaintsRule11 08-05-2012 10:25 PM

I would say so far this defense - although this was only one irrelevant preseason game - reminds me a little more of the 2009 defense, giving up some big plays but playing better in the red zone and getting turnovers when needed.

buckblaster1 08-05-2012 10:30 PM

i personaly saw alot of good in the starters . an int. some penatration on the line. thought lofton looked real good. and something u dont see a whole lot of defensive players actually wrapping up when they tackel instead using their shoulder pads to knok guys down

Maybe we were looking at two different games. I saw much of the same old no-wrap tackling like much of last year's D.

I guess we were. Our first unit looked hella stout.

Halo 08-05-2012 10:39 PM

hmmm, I'm with the lets give it 2 pre-season games before evaluating.
I thought our D-line played exceptionally well.
Martez Wilson and Cam Jordan looked good.

What about Sedric Elllis? Did he play poorly? Not at all.
And Lofton? Come on guys, we saw some good things tonight.

The Dude 08-05-2012 10:46 PM

I saw some great things out of key players. Tez, Lofton, Ellis, Jenkins, Jorden, to name a few. They just need to come together as a unit a bit. Yes our running D did look bad, but we are keying in on that because we have seen it before and it is a burning problem. Looking at the big picture I think we did well. Especially the starters. I will give them till the third pre season game before I start worrying about any position. Another position of concern for me is the Oline. Again I think it is even more important for them to play together and gel because we have basically replaced our entire oline in the past two seasons.

Beastmode 08-05-2012 10:53 PM

They actually looked good enough to be average to slightly better which is all we need to make a serious run. Little concerned about penalties but way too early to start dinging.

alleycat_126 08-05-2012 11:00 PM

You cant tell me there weren't some things to grow on. That is why we play these right. I saw by definition an actual bounty hit!!!! ( Sedrick Ellis on Kevin Corn on the Kolb) An actual Malcolm Jenkins Int!!!!! Several Martez Wilson sacks on third downs. a 17-7 stop of the offense that if chase daniels puts in the endzone we are not even talking about the d fense. Give us a break with the sky is fallin talk!!!!

SaintsBro 08-05-2012 11:12 PM

If you did not have fun watching the game, then maybe you should not have watched the game.

yeah and it was the opening game, but certainly didn't look fantastic

TheOak 08-06-2012 07:07 AM

They looked GOOD! Defenses are always the slowest out of the starting blocks each season.. This is why QB's but up such big numbers in week 1 and 2.

1. I saw open field tackling. New to us... traditionally its been the open field spear attempt.
2. I saw tackles behind the line of scrimmage. We normally wait for someone to trip once he hits the pile.
3. Lofton looked damn good.

We held Arizona to 82 yards rushing and the longest was 12 yards... They averages a measly 2.6 YPC.

First QTR was the litmus test.
Interception
3 and out
took out a QB for free.

Our starting CB were out so I give them a pass on this game even though the Cards ave 5.7 yards per pass.

SmashMouth 08-06-2012 07:11 AM

Well... they DID register a cart-off, almost. Or is it Kolb who just can't cut it?

saintsfan1976 08-06-2012 07:14 AM

They were gassed. Plain and simple.

And the radio guys talked about this right before the game.

Never read too much into a pre-season game good or bad.

Individual match-ups are more telling. Our guys were flying all over the field, were agressive and for the most part looked fine to me.

The occasional big gainer in pre-season doesn't worry me as much as getting gashed on every play. I thought our run defense looked solid for the most part.

SaintKiller 08-06-2012 08:00 AM

I must say C-Lo looked better in coverage than he did with us, maybe the weight loss did help him!?

It's not just you. It is hard to miss a player constantly looking bad. That long run they had on outside, Shanle was so locked up it was sad. The guy is JUNK!!!

Mardigras9 08-06-2012 09:49 AM

LB's looked good I thought, except Shanle. Pressure looked decent from the front four. Still gave up some big plays, but preseason has a long way to go so we'll see.

AlaskaSaints 08-06-2012 02:52 PM

SHANLE NEEDS TO PAY-TO-PLAY.

Simple as that. He's NOT earning whatever we are paying him. Period.

There is absolutely NO excuse for him to remain a part of this team once cuts are made.

We did relatively well with our DE's play. We may need another major player in the DT rotation. I didn't see very much push from the middle of the D-line. We don't collapse a pocket with pressure up the middle. The QB's just got rattled and could have stayed in the pocket much more often than they did.

Vrillon82 08-06-2012 11:16 PM

our run defense is good, its going to let some guys by for a few yards every now and then, but last night it wasnt near about as bad as it has been.

T. Walker #75 is the answer. This guy was a stud in the second half of the game. Yes, I know it was against scrubs but he deserves to be looked at. I am also excited to see Hicks in the next Preseason game.

dizzle88 08-07-2012 05:29 AM

I'd be happy if we could get a 7th round pick for shanle, man whatever scheme he's in, everybody else is flying around and he just stands there lost
