The play of the linebackers, who were maligned last season, was a bright spot in offseason workouts. Rookie ILB Courtney Watson showed surprising playmaking ability. If he can hold up against the run during contact drills, he'll have the inside track to start. Coaches also are happy with the progress of ILB Cie Grant, who is instinctive and athletic, and OLB James Allen, a punishing run stopper who missed too many assignments in coverage last season. . . .

CB Fakhir Brown might be the team's most improved player. He is the dime back, but coaches think he can challenge for a starting spot or the nickel role.
