So far, rookies are making the Saints look smart
So far, rookies are making the Saints look smart
Nick Deriso nderiso@thenewsstar.com July 6, 2004 The headline for most NFL drafts should read: CAN miss. That makes the early news out of the New Orleans Saints' off-season look rather ironic then, right? The story is that Notre Dame linebacker Courtney Watson has the intellectual acumen of former five-time All Pro Sam Mills. We hear that Ohio State defensive end Will Smith has the physical ability to move from defensive end to linebacker. But history is not on their side, right? We know better, right? Not exactly. In the five years leading up to this April's NFL Draft, 1,276 collegiate athletes have been selected. Just 300 players both remained on the roster of the team that drafted them and started a game as a pro. Even so, that doesn't keep fans from hoping against hope. The warmer months are an elixir - that period when every team is dead even, and any dream might come true. Upside is everything. And draft picks are upside personified.
