Gleason bothered that “no one seemed shocked” by Gregg Williams’ pre-game rant
When audio surfaced from a defensive meeting the night before the Saints’ postseason loss to the 49ers, much of the conversation regarding former Saints defensive back Steve Gleason — whose unique access to the team allowed the tape to be made — centered on whether his desire for discretion should have been honored by the filmmaker who captured the words of former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.
Gleason, whose blocked punt that will echo in eternity is now memorialized in bronze outside the Superdome, now addresses the substance of the remarks in an interview with HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. And the man whose ALS may have been caused by a career in football that entailed having his bell rung “hundreds” of times took exception to Williams’ directive to attack certain body parts of specific offensive players. “[W]hen he specified the other players’ injuries, that to me, was over the line,” Gleason said in a rough cut of the show, which PFT obtained from HBO. Of course they weren't shocked... they have been hearing the same crap from GW for 3 years. GW is the dude who did the Triple H crotch thing, for crying out loud. I don't think Gleason was around defensive meetings that much since he retired.

Re: Gleason bothered that “no one seemed shocked” by Gregg Williams’ pre-game rant
In the heat of the moment people make harsh comments. As unsettling as it sounds, what he said and what happened on the field are completely two different realities.
Being a former Marine, I've heard my fair share of fiery brand speeches that would make his speech sound like a tupperware party. Did I ever eat the young of my enemy? Did I ever kill enemies to hear their women and childred cry? Of course not. It's chest beating rhetoric to fire people up. If I do this stuff the only thing in it for me is a likely cell in Fort Levinworth and for sure a lifetime of guilt. Just the fact the Saints were penalized for illegal hits says it all to me. Reward a player for a "cart off" but penalize him for an illegal hit? It makes no freakin sense. What kind of bounty system does that? I'll tell you what kind; none. |

As for Williams' comments, I mean come on. My little league football coach regularly directed me to "kill 'em" when referring to opponents, and described many situations where we should be "drinking blood." From what I understand, compared to my brothers' coaches, mine was a cupcake. |
Re: Gleason bothered that “no one seemed shocked” by Gregg Williams’ pre-game rant
I was an infielder and pitcher when I played baseball from 7 years to 18 years old. Every coach I ever had, EVER, instructed me to throw at a guy to back him off the plate if that's what it took. Yes, even 7 years old in Pee Wee league. That's how the game is played.
All this crap about Williams' speech is a politically correct world run completely amuck. It's a mob mentality. The vigilantes are out in full force. Hypocrites one and all. |
Re: Gleason bothered that “no one seemed shocked” by Gregg Williams’ pre-game rant
You do what ever it takes to take out the other teams bast player. The team you're palying was told to do the same thing.
It's just how you present it. |

I think that Gleason is also saying "no one was shocked" but keep in mind, he was only there in the room as a guest when the insane 49ers speech was given-- he was not privy to what the current players said or did amongst themselves, especially all season long. He doesn't know who was really shocked or not. Maybe "no one was shocked" because Williams had been saying psychotic and insane stuff for three years, as an obvious rhetorical or allegorical device. But it wasn't real, which is what everyone who was really on the inside is saying, including Vitt and Gregg Williams himself ('he knew it was wrong but got carried away with it"). Because it's obvious from the way that they played all year, that the Saints defensive players were used to Williams' rantings, and they took it with a HUGE grain of salt,or understood that it was just rhetoric or language. It's a weird thing for Gleason to say, but I will wait until I see the whole interview to decide what I think. But.. if you put yourself back in the moment when Pampillon "leaked" that audio, this quote sounds exactly like the type of comment that many people were making back when that 49ers audio first dropped, in the initial flush of anger, not what people are saying now. It could be footage which somebody taped and then sat on. We'll find out. |

Agreed, one of my HS coaches did the same thing before a game against a team that was sure to destroy us (and did). He's like- this is David vs Goliath, now go out and F someone up. Lower your F-ing head and put someone on the bench. Just to get you pumped to play hard. Nothing more. |

Re: Gleason bothered that “no one seemed shocked” by Gregg Williams’ pre-game rant
I get a couple of things from this:
1. It has been stated countless times by defensive players from other teams that GW's rants are typical of DC's through out the league for pregame pep talks. 2. Gleason "may" be angling this for the player lawsuits against the NFL... 3. Or what I choose to believe, With the pending lawsuits for Vilma et al, it paints a picture that it is not the players that were driving this but GW, and the players were doing what they were told.... |
Re: Gleason bothered that “no one seemed shocked” by Gregg Williams’ pre-game rant
It's being aired at this time because in spite of protests to the contrary, the same folk have interests in spen and HBO. spen is desperately "standing behind their stories" because if they don't, it's really gonna cost them. We all know that in this trial by media society that repeating one side of the story over and over and over is much better than actual proof. For all I know those hairy corporate rat bastards edited three or four of Gleason's random sentences together to make this "statement".

Re: Gleason bothered that “no one seemed shocked” by Gregg Williams’ pre-game rant
I can not imagine that the entire show is about the Williams pre-game speech and Steve Gleason's reaction to it. Pathetic that they choose to continue to focus on this.

This is a non-factor. The topic will die with the end of this thread.

Re: Gleason bothered that “no one seemed shocked” by Gregg Williams’ pre-game rant
Williams was so ineffective as a coach that he had to resort to rants to try to motivate his team.

Re: Gleason bothered that “no one seemed shocked” by Gregg Williams’ pre-game rant
The Saints just made a statue of this guy, and this is how he repays them? I know it's directed specifically at Williams, but by saying he was surprised no one was shocked it sounds like he's accusing the players of being terrible people for not doing something.
But I agree with several posts on here that nothing Gregg said was unusual. Any idiot could tell you it's all rhetoric. There isn't a single person on earth who doesn't use some rhetorical phrase at some point everyday. For instance: "Man, my head is killing me" or "This is boring me to death"... Or you might be standing in a long line at the DMV, and there are a group of loud people behind you and you start getting frustrated and say to yourself "if these people don't shut up I'm gonna blow this place up". Do we actually intend to blow it up? Is your head literally pulling out a chainsaw and killing you when you have a headache? Do we literally get so bored that we just drop dead? Of course not. Hypocrisy has hit an all time high. |

I feel for the guy and his immense physical challenge before him…
The stress of what he is going through is seems to be affecting his judgement… He’s caused his former team and teammates nothing but difficulty... He should, quite honestly, limit the scope of his activities to bringing attention to his disease which, in the bigger picture, should be more important than one NFL team being exposed for what 31 other NFL teams have done or still practice… |
