The Saints need pure LBs. Merriman is not that good at pure LB. He made his claim to fame in SD rushing the passer off a 3-4. Not a really good fit here.

Im not sure i see the point in this trade.
Why waste a draft pick on a injury prone vet.Surely there would be free agents out there that could do the same job.

Been awhile since I have heard anything regarding Rudd. This is clearly a need and I would feel he came really cheap. Overall a space filler.

Ruud had shoulder surgery this offseason;

Solid vet. Worth a look.

This is a solid pickup. And maybe Rudd can teach our boys how to tackle.

Remember this guy as a high functioning linebacker with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He journeyed off to Tennessee then to Seattle, now to NOLA. For several years he led the Bucs in tackles.

Totally agree, let's hope he brings a solid TACKLING ethic.

Re: Saints acquire LB Barrett Rudd from Seahawks for an Undisclosed Pick

We have learned that some players that do terrible at one team can actually flourish at another. Its all about fit.

If Loomis grabbed him it is either because he is better than his play has shown, or he is the best available. He is still better than Shanle.

Our front office has been pretty damn good at finding diamonds in the rough.....

Regardless of how you feel about Rudd, he probably will not see much of the field after week 2.

I look at Rudd as more of a replacement for Humber

Hawthorn and Lofton are projected to be back around week 1.

Last night on WWLTV and Fox8Live Humber was projected to play in remaining preseason games. Apparently the Saints signed him knowing he had a 3 game suspension coming.

Again, the Humber suspension was not something new. It became apparent when Lofton and Hawthorne were reported as injured from the Jags game.

He was a beast with the Huskers. Unfortunately the injuries and age have diminished his ability. But not a bad move, he's got a world of starting experience if he can stay healthy.

Exactly, Humbers suspension was not a biggie being a back up, but when your two starters are hurt and your back up goes down it is time to get a back up for the back up in case the starters can start but go down or cant run a full game..

I wonder if our RIDICULOUSLY ALL PRO OFFENSIVE LINE might have been who's jock he was eating and who was knocking him on his arse all day...I am more curious about how he did against other running backs than how he did against us.

He is a longtime vet with an injury list as long as my arm, but realistically he only might be needed for the first half of the season if we get some of these other injuries and suspensions back. Remember how Mike McKenzie came back off the street and looked like an amazing baller against the Pats, everybody was like YEAHHHHHH, and he was good for about a half game after that, then dropped off and looked bad and we cut him when other people came back from injuries. That's really all we might need from this dude here. Or maybe we get more from him, who knows.

Difference was that MM didn't cost us a draft pick. However I feel that our FO would never trade for a guy unless they had a really good feeling about him.

Shanle drafted in 2003
Ruud in 2005

So yeah, didn't think of that! :clown:

It's a conditional pick based upon Rudd making the team and how much he plays. It will probably be a 5th rounder.

Re: Saints acquire LB Barrett Rudd from Seahawks for an Undisclosed Pick

The guy was a very good player a long time ago. Now he's just a journeyman MLB that we probably give a 7th for, and he's merely insurance in case Lofton can't go week 1.

He can probably still bring it for a few games, which is all we really need.

He was the bucs leading tackler for four years straight! Got 200 tackles one year! Don't know what he's got left but he was a beast for awhile.

That's my thought also. We could have brought in a FA retread, but committing a pick means we must like him. I remember he had a couple of really strong games against us- 10 tackles twice in past couple years

Merriman moved to DE to revive his career and it didn't work, so I'd pass

Merriman is a risk for anyone. In 2010 he suffered an Achilles tendon injury in the first ever practice after the Bills picked him up. Bills put him IR and Merriman signed a 2 year extension with 5 million guaranteed. One year later, in October of 2011, Merriman suffered a torn Achilles tendon and the Bills released him. For 2012, the Bills switched to a 4-3 and moved Merriman to end, then released him.

I think Merriman is plagued with injuries and I can tell you from experience, if you injure your Achilles, you never forget it the rest of your life. Knowing our front office, Ruud was probably the best talent for the right price on the market. :bng:

If we wanted a DE wouldn't Andre Carter be worth a look before Merriman.

Probably could have been because the Bucs Dline was garbage. You dont really get the whole story when it comes to looking at tackles.

Yeah, I don't see us offering anything higher than a 6th or 7th round draft pick. He is coming off surgery and is value seems relatively low but he could pull a Sharper and revive his career.

Yeah, that's what I meant. More metaphorical than a literal comparison.

#Saints GM Mickey Loomis said LB Barrett Ruud has passed his physical today. So Ruud should be full go for Wednesday's practice.

He was the odd man out in Seattle; it looks like he was an insurance policy in case the guy they moved down to draft didn't cut it
I think it's a good pick up and that he'll see significant time on 9/10, and might even start

I doubt this is considered a long term solution, but probably plugs a hole for now and maybe a backup who provides some ST help

I doubt he will play ST's, but he can start in the immediate future and will be great depth...

Somebody made the effort to go out and get the guy. We could have picked some scrub from the trash heap but the people who brought us Junior Gallette, Chris Ivory and Isa Quduus saw fit to trade for him so I'm good with it.

Excellent point, and let me add...

Pierre Thomas, Jo-Lonn Dunbar, De La Puente, Lance Moore, Vilma (who many thought was over), Dave Thomas, Scott Shanle (OK bad example), Casillas, Hartley, Cadet and even Darren Sharper.

All were met with skepticism and poo-pooed by many and all turned out to be solid moves.

The more I hear about this guy the more I think he has a huge upside. Even the Falcons fan at work told me he was legit. We might have found a good vet on the cusp or resurecting his career.

P.S. Im gonna laugh my ass off if Shanle beasts out this year and has a monster season.

Define "injury prone".
According to NFL.com, from 2005 to 2010, Rudd missed only one game in 2007. Last year, he played 9 games with the Titans, but was placed on IR after wk 14. He played last Saturday against Denver.

So other than a player that likes to eat jocks, can't we pick up some stragglers from the Giants or Ravens or some other team with good LB depth?

I would guess that they looked at what was available from all 32 teams.

There's always a chance that one of those teams might cut someone worth picking up after preseason though.

Re: Saints acquire LB Barrett Rudd from Seahawks for an Undisclosed Pick

As for Ruud playing special teams, it may well happen -- somebody who has access to it (not me) needs to take another look at that RIDONKULOUS onside kick that Jacksonville ran against us. I'm not saying he's to blame, but I feel like Humber was on the field right in the front of the kick formation when that particular piece of ridiculousness happened.
