Saints acquire LB Barrett Rudd from Seahawks for an Undisclosed Pick

Re: Saints trade Seahawks for LB Barrett Rudd for Undisclosed Pick

Barrett Ruud's regular 2009 statistics look impressive: 142 tackles, tied for second with London Fletcher and behind Patrick Willis for the most tackles in 2009. Some of that is due to the poor play around him, which means he's often the first one to actually tackle opposing players. However, that's not all of it: Ruud has great range and diagnoses the play very well. According to Football Outsiders he was in on 19% of all Bucs defensive plays in 2008, which was the highest percentage of any player in the league. In 2009 he was in on 18% of all plays, which was 7th highest in the league. Whatever his 2009 faults were, he was good at getting to the ball before the play was over.

Another thing that few people will dispute: Ruud is great in coverage. He can run down the seam with most tight ends in the league and has a good feel for the underneath passing game. He doesn't show up much in the passing stats, but that can be attributed to teams throwing less to his area of the field. Of course, any MLB will still have to rely on safety help over the top, and we were woefully lacking last year in that aspect, at least when Sabby was the relevant safety.

Those aspects of his play are the least controversial, but the one aspect that has this fanbase divided on Ruud is his play against the run. In an attempt to resolve this, I'll take a look at Ruud's advanced statistics in the run game and what they say about his play last year after the jump.

Examining Barrett Ruud's 2009 season using Football Outsiders' advanced statistics - Bucs Nation

He had multiple seasons like that in Tampa Bay. So there's the little upside... and there's that garbage player that was only being mentioned when he was ran over like a rag doll in Tampa Bay.

At least give the guy a chance. Dude hasn't even put on a uniform yet and you have the Saint trolls come out the woodwork and ragging on him. Heaven forbid the guy misses a tackle while he's here.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.

All little common sense goes a long way.

THANKS PAPZ, good stat read on ruud. if he can cover a tightend or lock end on a running qb, i know 2 that can and will run on our schedule, he's a great pick-up.

With all the injuries, this move almost seems like an absolute necessity. I like it.

I know he ate Ivory's jock, but I thought the guy was a decent LB for the Bucs. I lost track of him. I definitely like the depth!

I wonder if our RIDICULOUSLY ALL PRO OFFENSIVE LINE might have been who's jock he was eating and who was knocking him on his arse all day...I am more curious about how he did against other running backs than how he did against us.

He is a longtime vet with an injury list as long as my arm, but realistically he only might be needed for the first half of the season if we get some of these other injuries and suspensions back. Remember how Mike McKenzie came back off the street and looked like an amazing baller against the Pats, everybody was like YEAHHHHHH, and he was good for about a half game after that, then dropped off and looked bad and we cut him when other people came back from injuries. That's really all we might need from this dude here. Or maybe we get more from him, who knows.

Difference was that MM didn't cost us a draft pick. However I feel that our FO would never trade for a guy unless they had a really good feeling about him.

It's a conditional pick based upon Rudd making the team and how much he plays. It will probably be a 5th rounder.

That's my thought also. We could have brought in a FA retread, but committing a pick means we must like him. I remember he had a couple of really strong games against us- 10 tackles twice in past couple years

Merriman moved to DE to revive his career and it didn't work, so I'd pass

Merriman is a risk for anyone. In 2010 he suffered an Achilles tendon injury in the first ever practice after the Bills picked him up. Bills put him IR and Merriman signed a 2 year extension with 5 million guaranteed. One year later, in October of 2011, Merriman suffered a torn Achilles tendon and the Bills released him. For 2012, the Bills switched to a 4-3 and moved Merriman to end, then released him.

I think Merriman is plagued with injuries and I can tell you from experience, if you injure your Achilles, you never forget it the rest of your life. Knowing our front office, Ruud was probably the best talent for the right price on the market.

I think it a good trade if he can plays the way he played at Tampa Bay.
