New Orleans Saints working out their tackling issues
1 Attachment(s)
Watching Jacksonville running back Rashad Jennings slip through arm tackles and receiver Justin Blackmon break away from defenders was a disgusting sight for the New Orleans Saints' defensive coaching staff.
Their hope is never to see such sloppy tackling again from Saints defenders. Four days after the Saints routinely failed to bring down Jacksonville ball carriers, the Saints continued to work on their tackling fundamentals, an aspect of the game that was sorely missing in the 27-24 exhibition loss to the Jaguars last Friday. "Not very good," Saints defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said of the Saints' tackling. "And the guys recognize that. We talked about it. Talking about it doesn't do anything. But this group is one of those groups that when they have something to prove they usually respond. "Now we'll see what happens in this particular game. I don't think we can win very many games tackling like we did." That's precisely why the Saints worked on tackling fundamentals for two days during practice this week. While the Saints didn't take part in any all-out tackling, bringing players to the ground, their defenders did work on proper tackling techniques. They also did multiple drills with wrapping up against teammates and hitting practice dummies. Continue reading |
Re: New Orleans Saints working out their tackling issues
This is what pre-season is for. Work on fundamentals.

Re: New Orleans Saints working out their tackling issues
Scheme doesn't really matter if you can't make the tackle.

It's about time...

He could've written "sorely missing for much of last season" instead. |
Re: New Orleans Saints working out their tackling issues
I watched the reply yesterday on NFL network they looked bad on both sides of the ball. We made they QB look like a pro bowler and I can't even think of his name but the third downs and the tackling looked really bad. We better get it together fast were going to be on national tv this week against a very good Texans team.

Re: New Orleans Saints working out their tackling issues
At least they're making an effort to correct it. I don't ever recall news of GW working on fundamentals

Maybe we should try this. Mickey always had the answer
Then we could then do this |
Re: New Orleans Saints working out their tackling issues
Gregg Williams is one of those guys who jumps teams, starts off strong, and I guess he gets tired of the team after a year and he comes up with nothing new.
This was one of the problems I saw with him as a coordinator. I think the JAX game was just the Saints getting rid of the after taste of Gregg Williams coaching where tackling always was an issue. |

Re: New Orleans Saints working out their tackling issues
Don't know if theres any Arrested Development fans out there (great show if you missed it) but I wonder, after Payton dished out all that $$ to get Gregg on board, when the exact moment was that Sean looked around and said,
"I've made a HUGE mistake." |

I hope they see this thread:

The money probably isn't a factor sice Benson re-paid Payton, but I'm sure there was a point at which Payton was convinced Gregg had to go. I wonder when that point was. |

Re: New Orleans Saints working out their tackling issues
Work it out in pre-season and have it gone by Sept 9, all that matters.

I'd just like to know when that first little inkling of doubt crept into his mind, which eventually turned into 'that look' that was captured in some random photograph of Payton that I saw (Quite possibly after the Seattle game, but that's really as much of that memory that I want to dig up). Wish I could find it, cause it summed up everything |
Re: New Orleans Saints working out their tackling issues
I just wish we could tackle, they might get a pointer or 2 from a pee-wee league, I'm sure a 6 or 7 year old can tell these full-grown pro- athletes who make a kings wage a thing or 2 in the fine art of tackling because they don't seem to get the concept down.

Re: New Orleans Saints working out their tackling issues
Not to thread jack but speaking of Williams I believe that he was going to get fired and he knew it was coming. It would not surprise me if he threw that game on purpose.
