Consider me hunkered!! Ran to the store today, got some snacks, batteries, chicken and other groceries. I have a gas stove and I have my grill hooked up to natural gas. There will be no food going to waste :)

I was stationed (Army) in Bavaria from '88-'91 and married a wonderful fraulein.
It didn't work out in the long run.
I got some easy "foreign language" credits later though!

good to see we're paying attention.... Also good that you guys know the drill, and you know where to get real information, not hype.

I about half ashamed of the way Houston Media is dealing with this, already invoking the K-word, and all the hype that people who dont really know about New Orleans say. Please understand that most people on the air in Houston are not FROM Texas, much less the Gulf Coast.

Right!! If we all waited for the media and the government to tell us anything, we wouldn't make it..LOL

This is nowhere near a Katrina type storm. We will be fine. Appreciate the well wishes..I will be back to talk about our boys in black and gold in hopefully 3 days when the power comes back on..lol

@Papz..take care of your family bro!! Enjoy your mini vacay..lol If I had the means, I would be doing the same thing just so I could get a break..lol

Graci.

If it were just the wife and I, we'd probably stay and get drunk. This storm should be nothing honestly. However, better safe than sorry... plus I've been wanting to get out of town. Got to work til noon... then I'm off into the sunset!

Yeah, this sucks.

People already going crazy on the West Bank last night & this morning. Gas, bread, etc. has been gone for hours. I've already told the boss I ain't working Tuesday night / Wednesday morning (I work the graveyard shift).

I've got no intention of sitting in NOLA waiting on this thing, even if it turns out to be a big wuss. If that's the case ... well, I've got some extra water, beer & beenie weenies if y'all want some! Me, wifey & doggie will be hunkered in Gonzales.

The problem is unfortunetly its not going to be a wuss. If the GFS verifies, we are talking up to 36 hrs of hurricane force winds. It is predicting that once he comes ashore he is going to damn near stop! Then slowly drift NW. It's showing him not leaving SELA until Thursday!! The rain fall prediction is approaching 20".

Even though this is going to be a relatively weak hurricane, it is going to be a strengthing hurricane on landfall. This is going to make it much worse. During Katrina, new orleans experienced gust 90 to 100 mph. Big difference between gusts and sustained winds. Especially for the time frame we are looking at. It's going to be a ruff ride!

Are you riding it out in MidCity, CM? Not trying to induce paranoia, but a co-worker of mine braved Katrina near Jesuit & the company had to pick him up in a motorboat!

Lacking his dedication ... I'm gonna work tonight, but I'll be the heck outta NOLA by 8 AM Tuesday. :)

Oh, yeah - I shouldn't have to say it, but - if anyone intends to evacuate & is unable to take your dog, cat, goat, shetland pony, honey badger, etc. with you:

Please don't tie him / her to a tree, stake, or any other stationary object which might result in death by: drowning, starvation, foreign animal attack, etc. Animals do a remarkable job of caring for themselves, but not if you've nullified their ability to do so. Please do all you can to attend to your furry friend, but if they absolutely can't travel with you, at least give them a fighting chance.

I know right where you are talking about. I live off orleans between city park ave and s. carrolton. The house I am in didn't flood for Katrina, so we should be good.

Re: SEVERE WEATHER ALERT --- ISAAC HEADS UP

Isaac is walking the line of hurricane status this afternoon after a hurricane hunter mission investigated the storm and found winds of 80+ mph with the SFMR instrument, which looks down at the surface from the plane and estimates what wind speeds are. This instrument has a notoriously rough time in doing so when there's heavy rain, and since the strongest winds were recorded coinciding with the strongest rain, you can imagine that this region of high wind speed could be suspect. The hurricane hunter mission is still in the storm, so I imagine they will issue a special update if needed. Currently the best estimate of wind speed within the storm is 70 mph. Isaac's pressure has been dropping today as well and is now 981 mb. Isaac is moving northwest at 12 mph--no change since this morning. Satellite loops show that Isaac remains large, though asymmetric, with most of the strong thunderstorm activity on the west and southwest side. Isaac's southeast side continues to struggle with dry air and wind shear, which could help to moderate Isaac's intensity as it approaches the coast.

An oil platform in the northern Gulf of Mexico is reporting sustained winds from the north-northeast at 40 mph this afternoon. A buoy west of Tampa, Florida is recording sustained winds around 30 mph, and platforms south of Louisiana are recording winds from 35-40 mph. The widespread heavy rain of yesterday has lightened up in Florida, but a strong line of thunderstorms in one of Isaac's outer bands is training northward along and offshore of the east coast of Florida, affecting everyone from Miami to Jacksonville.

This afternoon the AP reported that Isaac's death toll in Haiti jumped to 19, which puts Isaac's total death count at 21. It appears most of the deaths in Haiti were due to collapsing structures.
