Dome Music: A Rant
As I've said elsewhere, due to "financial constraints," last night's preseason game vs. the Texans was my first game at the Dome since 2005. The wife & I grabbed a couple of $9 beers (ugh!) and went to our seats about 30 minutes before kickoff. It had been so long, we just wanted to bask in the Dome environment for a little bit.
In moments I realized something that hopefully doesn't get my Saints Fan Card revoked ... our pre-game music SUCKS! We entered to some boastful gangsta rap hip-hop crunk dirty south whateveryacallit - and that's fine. It's not my thing, but the entire Dome might not dig MY iPod playlist, either. Next song: gangsta rap hip-hop crunk dirty south whateveryacallit. The song after that: gangsta rap hip-hop crunk dirty south whateveryacallit. And so on, and so on ... for the love of gawd, I felt like I was at a Falcons game! Follow me here ... last time I checked, the New Orleans Saints play in the Superdome, which is ironically located in New Orleans, LA. The New Orleans area - and indeed the entire great state of Louisiana - is known worldwide for it's limitless contributions to great jazz, blues, cajun & zydeco music ... why can't we play some of it in the Dome? And didn't we used to??? Not to mention visiting fans. Heck, they can hear gangsta rap hip-hop crunk dirty south whateveryacallit in any city in America. Don't we owe the folks who visit New Orleans - an economy deeply reliant on the tourism industry - a legitimate "Nawlins" experience when their travels bring them to the Dome? Oh well, at least we still play "Joe Avery Blues" when the Saints score, but Benson don't dance no more. :) Ok, y'all can ban me now ... |
Re: Dome Music: A Rant
I'm right there with ya mutineer. As far as I'm concerned gangsta rap hip-hop crunk dirty south whateveryacallit should be outlawed. I know it is in my house.

Re: Dome Music: A Rant
California is currently trying to figure out how to tax gangsta rap hip-hop crunk dirty south whateveryacallit. I, for one, hope they succeed.
I think you make a excellent point about jazz and blues and the music the city if famous for and that maybe it should be prominent for the pre-game entertainment. Of course I loathe gangsta rap hip-hop crunk dirty south whateveryacallit crap, at least with very few exceptions. |

Re: Dome Music: A Rant
Excellent post Sir!
I like all kinds of music, even "gangsta rap hip-hop crunk dirty south whateveryacallit" but there is a time and place for everything and I agree i tends to be oo much of it in the dome. In a way I think it would be cool if NFL fans could pick up the positive aspects of european soccer with the crowd chanting and singing and having the massive banners. I went to a national team game the other week, Sweden vs Brazil, the Brazil fans played samba music in their sections and were dancing non stop. The swedish fans were chanting and singing the national anthem and after a while the wave started rolling around the stadium and just wouldn't really stop for atleast 15 minutes. At an NFL game if the crowd starts chanting or such you can be pretty sure somebody will start blasting Puff Smokey Smoke or Lil' Dawg on the speakers right away. |

And if the Saints ever play Brazil, watch for the topless chicks! :) One cool thing about the Redskins, they still have a marching band playing "Hail to the Redskins" after each Redskins score. (Ok, they don't really march anymore, they just sit on the stands, but still...) |
Re: Dome Music: A Rant
Good post. Definitely need a change in the dome. The Crunk song was fine in the dome for the superbowl year, it got the crowd pumped up before kick-off's, even the players would dance on the field. But it has run it's course, time for a change.

I'm ok with Krunk occasionally, esp after scores, but the last thing we should have to hear is crackhouse crap. Honestly, Im not really feeling the metal either. The average fan must be over 30, so why are we listening to teenager music? I say we have a college band for every home game. Im guessing the NFL doesnt allow them to play except at halftime,. But if I were the supreme dictator of All Football, we would have Southern or Grambling's marching bands jamming out Louisiana flavored music. If we did have any canned music, it would be a fun selection of retro hits--- but songs that jam, but appeal to everybody. If you need subversive coolness, go to a Dead Mary Poppins concert. This is a football game. Totally agree, Mutineer. |
Re: Dome Music: A Rant
I don't know if it is the same in the NFL, but I have been told by a pretty knowledgeable Hornets source that in the NBA at least, the hip hop that they play during the pre-game warm-ups BEFORE the game (at the Hornets games for instance) is requested by the players themselves.
Now I don't like crunk or dirty south music AT ALL but I love the "Stand Up And Get Crunk" song after touchdowns, and I can't believe people here are hating on it....wow, tough crowd! It's one of the things that makes us us. If you are way up top in the terrace, people beat on the metal walls of the Dome in time with that drum fill in the very beginning... It's like war drums or something. It's awesome to watch visiting fans react to the craziness, their faces go blank when they see the Dome go crazy. It will get tired and played out eventually, but not everyone is there yet...it's unique to us, to the winning era we're in, so what's not to love. |
Re: Dome Music: A Rant
If we saw THE face of THE person who makes these decisions, maybe we'd have a better understanding...
Or maybe it would be a total breakdown of understanding! One thing for sure; this is pervasive throughout the NFL, therefore it rests squarely on the shoulders of Goodell. Alaska |

But - although I did a poor job - I didn't want to suggest that the "Get Crunk" song should disappear or anything. Lord knows, the music I deemed gangsta rap hip-hop crunk dirty south whateveryacallit belongs in the cultural and musical fabric of New Orleans as much as the jazz, blues, cajun & zydeco I mentioned. I only wanted to make a plea for some diversity - a "gumbo" if you will :) - of Louisiana's varied blends & styles of music. There's so much artistry to offer here that no other region can compare to, we should put it on display. |
Re: Dome Music: A Rant
Ok how about some New Orleans originated music:
Lillian Axe Louis Armstrong Better than Ezra Harry Connick Jr. Cowboy Mouth Fats Domino and throw in some C-Murdah from time to time New Orleans is a cornucopia of musical origin... Blend it all in... Doesn't always need to be Blues, Rap, or a mix tape from the 80's. |

Re: Dome Music: A Rant
IIRC, the music was decent in 2006 before games, since then its just gone down hill. Crunk might be overplayed but it gets the crowd to go ape-**** bananas and strikes fear in opposing fans, which adds to the mystique of the dome, any song that does that is ok in my book

Re: Dome Music: A Rant
Another thing to think about...I have no proof of this but I've always felt for a while now that Drew might actually be behind, or at least supportive of, the Crunk song playing after every touchdown...he freaking LOVES those kind of game rituals -- like the beefy cheesy mac, the pregame chant he does with the team, the "Who Dat" thing with the crowd in the Dome, and the way that at the start of the second half of EVERY game in the Dome, he always runs out the locker room and goes jogging all the way to the opposite goal line and plants his feet over the goal line, right there in the end zone. And if you remember, Purdue plays the "Purdue Fight Song" after every touchdown, so I'm sure he got exposed to the idea of a song that plays automatically after every TD score. We don't know -- I'm pretty sure he's not the one who picked the song out, but it would not surprise me one bit if it turned out that Drew had something to do with it becoming a recent Saints tradition.

Re: Dome Music: A Rant
When at the dome, the music is the least of my worries. I just want to witness a win. I am not a big fan of gangsta rap or whatnot but it is a cultural thing and I have learned to accept it.

Re: Dome Music: A Rant
Rap is to music what etch-a-sketch is to art.

Re: Dome Music: A Rant
Think there needs to be something new to catch on. Need a jingle guy.

Re: Dome Music: A Rant
Sounds like a good idea on the surface, changing up the music and all, but to what?
"When the Saints Come Marching In" is not exactly stand up and dance in the aisles music after a touchdown, is it? I mean, with all of the music genius in New Orleans, you would think SOMEONE would come up with a stinking Fight Song. I mean come on now, if those freakin' mutants in Philly can come up with "Fly Eagles, Fly" to rock the stadium with, can't the talent of NOLA come up with something? |
Re: Dome Music: A Rant
Why do people in this thread keep wishing they would play "When The Saints," they already play "When The Saints" by Fats Domino, after every kicking score.

My team Liverpool and a london club spurs sing a variations of When the Saints go marching in.They would sound great at the Dome if the crowds started doing them. Liverpools "When the Reds go marching in" is quicker paced that the Spurs version "When the Spurs go marching in" Im noy sure how to post videos on here so ill post the links Couple other songs from Liverpool. The fans have a amazing repuation for creating atmosphere at grounds.Sadly after the hillsborough disaster(i know in the states it is always reported as a hooligan problem, but i can asure it it wasa not.It was caused by poor officiating by the police. They opened a gate and it led to thousands of fans pouring into a couple of pens rather than the whole terrace.Had they opened the fences a the front 96 fans would have returned home) there was a need for all seater stadiums and we had to close the legendary Spion Kop,named after a battle in the Boer war. Anfield - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Fields of Anfield Rd,reworked Irish freedom song Fields of Athenry The old Kop stand Sorry to ramble on but its very close to my heart as im sure youll understand. |

Re: Dome Music: A Rant
The Saints players pick the music before the game.
So if you've got a problem with it, I'm certain Roman Harper, Chris Ivory, etc., don't care. |
