Let’s state it up front, playing without starters and coaches on defense will not be the biggest challenge for the Fleur de Leigh as it would be for other teams. A mediocre defense compared to the rest of the NFL is something that this franchise as managed to overcome to achieve several playoff appearances (including one where they were sent home by a 7-9 Seahawk team thanks to said defense once in the post season). However, when your Head Coach/Offensive Mastermind and his assistant are both missing and an interim to the interim is calling the shots — that’s a challenge. That being said, many around the Saints camp believe Brees is the kind of leader that can help a team overcome that on the field. A tangible factor also working in the team’s favor is the weaker part of the schedule is in the first half of the year. This pushes a tough stretch where they face the 49ers, Bucs, Eagles, Giants and the Falcons twice after suspended parties are back on the field.
