I believe players on the commissioners exempt list basically doesn't count against the active 53 man roster, unless that player is actually activated for the game. So lets say in theory if the Saints had 53 guys on the final roster, Smith and Vilma were given roster exemptions for the opening week it would have pushed the roster to 55. When Smith was activated that eliminated that particular roster exemption. Since the Saints opened the season with a 50 man roster, the exemption was basically meaningless, but since Vilma was exempt it allowed the Saints an extra week to make a decision on putting him on the PUP list. ![]()
I know this is somewhat convoluted, but I think I am at least in the ballpark with this explanation. |
