Wide receivers

i know we have alot more problems than receivers but it is still a problem. Ive never really been a morgan fan...he had 2 good games vs scrubs in preseason a year ago and has been stinking it up. I feel like he has alot of drops. With devery out we need someone to pick up the slack. I know this isnt a popular person but i think chad johnson would fit here. he is known for his route running and thats all yo uneed to do in with brees. run a good route and catch the ball. supposedly CJ is too dumb to pick up offenses quickly but he has to be better than Morgan.

Re: Wide receivers

I say bring Tanner up off of the PS and waive Morgan and re-sign him to PS. You can always switch this up later in the season if Tanner doesn't pan out and I really don't think anyone will sign Morgan, he hasn't shown anything yet.

Re: Wide receivers

I get what you are getting at. Our receivers are not looking great. Colston is obviously not healthy. He can barely run for crying out loud. Moore started off decent but dissapeared. I don't know whats going on..are the receivers just not getting enough time to run there route and get open because the O line is not giving Drew enough time?

The regresion of the O line, IMO, is a direct result of Kromer not spending enough time with them. I just cross my fingers that Drew can avoid getting killed until Vitt gets back.

lee909 09-17-2012 09:26 AM

Colston injuries are a major concern, especially as there is little behind him on the depth chart.
I'm starting to get a little worried that last season was the last shot for this group of players and injuries/age is going to put the team on the downward slope for a couple of years.

Re: Wide receivers

Well I expected big things from Henry Ellard. We may be seeing some "growing pains" there as this is his first season working with our guys. And then right after he gets here, BOOM Goodell takes Payton out of the mix, so he's kind of coaching the receivers in a vacuum here... I miss Curtis Johnson. I knew it was gonna suck losing him, just didn't think it would be this noticeable. I am hopeful it will improve. We need veteran leadership right now, and Ellard does have that. I'm sure he has seen epidemics of the dropsies plague a receiving corps before, and hopefully knows the cure to turn it around. Hopefully.

Re: Wide receivers

Roby has yet to drop a ball all year has 11 catches 155 yards and averages 14 YPC.

Why is he not being used? He only has 11 catches because he has only been thrown the ball 11 times... He is 100% and I have yet to see him drop a ball.

Where is Mike Hass when you need him?

Re: Wide receivers

This is a problem, we have been dropping a lot of balls a s of lately. I think a big problem with this is with Curtis Johnson stepping away. We are dropping a lot more than before. I didn't put much into this, until i started thinking back when Devery seemed to drop everything thrown his way. Then Curtis came into the picture and turned his game around. Now he is gone look at us in two games how many dropped balls we have?

Where are you getting these numbers on Roby? ESPN has him with one catch for nine yards on this season.

The fact we lost our receivers coach to Tulane is not helping the situation. What do you think?

That is what I just said a few post before. This is a major problem. There is no doubt about it

Our coaching staff is just spread to thin. Period. The O line is not getting the attention it needs from Kromer because he is acting as head coach.

Re: Wide receivers

Again, it all comes back to the loss of Payton and Vitt. If the receivers have the dropsies, someone needs to get in the receivers' coach's face and ream them out, tear them a new one, then get in there with the white board and the X's and O's or the extra drills in practice and help them solve it.

Now I will say this -- Vitt is known to be a STICKLER for details. Like Drew, he knows that football is won on the details of execution and the little things. If we can hang in there until he gets back, he will have a lot more chance of getting stuff like this sorted out. But I hope they fix it before then.

He's counting the pre-season games

If SP was here Ocho could be managed but it's like having Owens on your sideline nothing but drama. I like Vitt and looking forward to his return but you have to remember its still not SP.

ESPIN doesn't provide preseason... They do a better split than NFL.com but NFL.com gives preseason.

Courtney Roby: Game Logs at NFL.com

Look at his Recieving stats in 05-06 with the Titans
Courtney Roby: Career Stats at NFL.com

05 21 catches for 289 yards 13.8 YPC

Everyone liked Meachems speed?
Meachem 40yd 4.40
Roby 40yd 4.41
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS, Robert Meachem Devery Henderson Marques Colston 40 YARD DASH TIMES

USATODAY.com

Analysis: Positives...Having added close to ten pounds of bulk to his frame during the 2004 offseason, he showed better toughness going for the ball in traffic...Has the ability to sink his hips and come out of his breaks with a sharp burst...Displays a good feel for getting open, constantly keeping his feet moving...Knows when to settle down in the zone's soft areas and has the ability to instantly turn on the afterburners to accelerate upfield after the catch...When left isolated one-on-one in the open, he will consistently out-race the defender...Tough competitor going for the ball in a crowd, willingly sacrificing his body to make the play...Shows crisp pattern running and the ability to break down plays, doing a good job of adjusting in his routes...Has made improvement in shortening his stride, which allows him to get out of his breaks much faster than he did in the past...Has a knack for getting between the defender and the ball, displaying the ability to adjust to the ball in flight...Has the body control to change direction instantly and the leaping skills to consistently get to the ball at its high point...Has the sudden burst and good hand usage to avoid the jam...Will go up for the ball and pluck and snatch it at its high point...More of a one-cut type of runner, but can explode after the catch...Knows how to stem and come out of his breaks with good speed.

Negatives...Even with the additional weight, he still looks skinny in his lower legs and has only adequate strength...Needs to stay lower in his pads, as he gets too high at times coming out of his breaks...Long-legged runner who has to build to top speed in the open field...Lacks strength and aggression as a blocker, being more of a pester type...Struggled to digest the playbook and needs several reps to understand plays (low test score)...Can beat press coverage, but struggles when defensive backs gets their hands on him... Because of his slight frame and lack of strength, he can be knocked off his route working up field...Not a natural hands catcher, as he prefers to cradle the ball.

Ocho was on the market plenty of times when SP was here and passed on him every time... For a reason.

8 or 10 last week, right? How many total drops did they actually have yesterday?

What kind of drama have you heard about Ocho? Name one thing he has pulled in the locker room or sidelines.

Bad personality fit. He is a glory hound, its all about him..... and the Pats cut him because he couldn't pick up the play book... Do you want to pick up a guy in week 3 that is too slow to pick up the play book? Brees will have his head spinning.

Re: Wide receivers

Would rather give Plex a try than Ocho.

lee909 09-17-2012 02:15 PM

Out of all the old WR that were available in the offseason the only one really worth touching was Moss.
I like Plaxico and don't get why a Miami/Browns didn't touch him for his red zone presence alone, wouldn't be a good fit here though.

Now the play book thing may be a reason not to pick him up, but from everything I have heard he got along great in the locker room. He just gets a bad wrap from the media because he clowns on them and isn't the yes man that most players are when it comes to dealing with the media. I just keep hearing how he is a cancer and no good in the locker room and that is simply not true.

With the offense that Brees runs.... I would take a royal azz that could pick it up vs a Mother Theresa that cant.

Re: Wide receivers

I know people say we miss Meachem and yes we do. With him and Devery that is UN-matched speed. At this present time we have NO one to stretch the field. With Grubbs in the lineup we can run but not pass due to pressure which I think can be corrected. IMHO T.O. is better than 90% of the current W R's in the game because what we have on the practice squad will not work either

chad johnson > TO. CJ is faster than TO. CJ would strectch the field too. i bet he is at least as fast as devery and definetely quicker. Morgan should be cut immediately. he is garbage. not only his receiving skills lack but also his blocking. if we lose this weekend im calling in mayday

I never saw the fixation people had with Morgan, undrafted free agent that returned a punt for a TD a year ago against 49ers 3rd strings in preseason, that's all he's done
We need to trade for a proven WR next offseason cuz we need the most help on D in the draft

Re: Wide receivers

If Chad couldn't pick up N.E. playbook, he doesn't have a prayer to pick up ours.

You guy'sreally don't think Plex has anything left? I'd think he would be worth a look if nothing else.
